Assistant Director

Join to apply for the Assistant Director role at THE ETHAN ALLEN HOMESTEAD MUSEUM INC

The Assistant Director will report to and work closely and collaboratively with the Executive Director. The Assistant Director will assist the Executive Director in all aspects of museum and nonprofit business management, and will take over lead direction of various projects as they progress in the position. The Assistant Director will train to step in as interim Director should the need ever arise.

This is a year‑round .67 position, or the equivalent of two‑thirds of a full‑time position. Accordingly, the Assistant Director will receive a salary of $32,500.00 and the equivalent of two‑thirds of a full‑time museum employee’s paid vacation, holidays, and sick time annually.

Responsibilities
  • Staff Supervision
  • Serve as Manager‑On‑Duty at the museum two days per week, May‑October
  • Immediate supervisor for the museum’s Weekend Manager, May‑October
  • Seasonal Museum Management
  • Prepare the museum for opening in April
  • Assist with winterizing the museum in October/November
  • Develop, oversee, and assist with special projects over the winter, November‑April
  • Work 27+ hours per week April‑October; more flexible hours in the winter
  • Grant writing & grant management
  • Host an annual fundraiser event
  • Oversee annual fundraiser mailings & digital campaigns
  • Collaborate with & assist the Executive Director in all aspects of museum & nonprofit business management, as delegated, & special projects as assigned, including, but not limited to the following:
  • Site management, historic house management, & collections management
  • Fundraising, bookkeeping, and budgeting
  • Guest services, outreach & marketing
  • Curation, exhibition, & research
  • Gift shop management
  • Assist and develop programming with other staff
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
Qualifications
  • Workstyle: highly organized, professional communication, resourceful, optimistic, energetic, high technological literacy
  • Technology skills:
    Google Drive (all features), Microsoft Excel, Facebook, Instagram, You Tube, Word Press, Shopify, Quickbooks
  • Experience or

    Education:

    4+ years in museums or business management, with staff supervision experience
  • Experience in fundraising (including grant writing and/or donor management), collections, historic houses, marketing, and/or historic research highly desired
  • Required:

    Reliable transportation; ability to run errands and do shopping for the museum
  • Required:

    Ability to lift 20+ pounds, be on your feet for long periods of time, complete janitorial work, lift boxes, move furniture, pull full drink coolers, put out road signs, shelve inventory, set up and take down pop‑up tents, go up and down ladders, etc.

About the EAHM

The EAHM is a small 501(c)(3) museum whose mission is to bring to life and preserve the history of this area, including the 1780’s Ethan Allen Homestead. Our programming and exhibitions cover the long and inclusive history of the site. Our collections primarily consist of farm and household artifacts found on this site through archaeological digs. The EAHM stewards the historic Allen House, a National Register Historic Site owned by the Winooski Valley Park District (WVPD).

The EAHM is located within the Ethan Allen Homestead Park in Burlington, Vermont, a 290‑acre park owned by the WVPD. The museum is open daily for six months of the year for general admission public programming, and runs special programming and manages special projects year‑round. The EAHM is run by a Board of Directors, an Executive Director, part‑time programming staff, and many volunteers.
