Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) are responsible for providing security and protection of travelers across all transportation sectors in a courteous and professional manner. Their duties also include securing high‑profile events, important figures, and safeguarding transportation systems.
Salary InformationBase salary: $53,568 to $66,047 per year (or $25.67 to $31.65 per hour). Includes 19.45% locality pay and a 15% retention incentive, contingent upon annual approval and funding.
Sign‑On BonusUp to $5,000 paid in two installments over the first 12 months of service, subject to change or elimination based on operational needs.
Duties- Operate various screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo, and on passengers, preventing transport onto aircraft.
- Conduct physical searches, including pat‑downs and bag searches, carrying items up to 50 lbs.
- Control terminal entry and exit points.
- Interact with the public, give directions, and respond to inquiries.
- Maintain focus and awareness in high‑stress environments, including noise, crowds, and disruptive passengers.
- Apply risk‑based screening protocols and other security procedures.
- Adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures and demonstrate responsible, dependable behavior.
- U.S. citizenship or U.S. national.
- Minimum age 18 at application time.
- Selective Service registration required.
- Pass structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation, background investigation, and random post‑employment testing.
- Available for various shifts, overtime, and support travel.
- Proficient in English and able to read, write, and speak.
- Mandatory travel for training; occasional travel may be required.
- Exposure to potentially lethal devices and hazardous chemicals is inherent in the position.
- Ability to squat, bend, lift and manipulate baggage and containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Walk up to 3 miles during a shift and stand for prolonged periods (up to 4 hours).
- Experience:
At least one year of full‑time work in security, aviation screening, or as an X‑ray technician. - Education:
High‑school diploma, GED, HiSET, or TASC. - Volunteer experience through national service programs (Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) is credited.
- Full‑time: 40 hours per week, usually shift work from Sunday through Saturday, including night, holiday, and overtime.
- Part‑time: 16–32 hours per week, shift work with similar irregular schedules.
- Complete all required training, certification, and recertification.
- Maintain background investigations, including criminal and credit checks.
- Undergo random drug and alcohol screening tests.
