Job description

Are you looking to gain real-world hands-on experience with one of the fastest-growing CPA firms in the province? If so, we invite you to apply to join our team at PEL Chartered Professional Accountants. We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced full-time Manager to be part of our dynamic firm and contribute to our mission of delivering exceptional accounting, tax and advisory services to owner-managed businesses.

The successful candidate will be an individual who is excited to join a growth-oriented, fast-paced firm and build strong long-term relationships with clients.

Who We Are

Our firm is led by a small group of relatively young partners that take a hands-on approach to helping clients solve problems. Our leadership group aims to bring best practices from their seasoned experience with the big-four and Canada’s Premier Tax Law Firm to the firm. We support a diverse and interesting range of clients, including real estate and construction, professional services, technology, start-ups, not-for-profits, wholesale and distribution, manufacturing and high-net-worth individuals.

Our firm offers a small and supportive team environment with lots of opportunity for development and growth — our team is a mix of employees who have recently qualified for or are working towards their CPA designation and employees who have been with us for 10+ years!

Responsibilities
  • Act as the primary point of contact for a portfolio of owner-managed business clients, building strong client relationships and providing practical day-to-day guidance.
  • Manage compilation and corporate tax compliance files from planning through completion, including coordinating information requests, timelines, budgets and client communication.
  • Review working papers, financial statements, corporate tax returns (T2s) and related schedules for accuracy, completeness and consistency with the client’s business.
  • Identify and resolve common accounting and tax issues that arise in owner-managed business files, including shareholder loans, payroll matters, GST/PST/WCB considerations, dividends, salaries, instalments and year-end planning matters.
  • Provide basic tax planning and advisory support for clients, and involve the firm’s tax specialists when a matter requires more advanced tax planning or technical analysis.
  • Develop an understanding of each client’s business, key risks and opportunities to deliver added value through timely advice and clear communication.
  • Monitor file progress in relation to budgets, WIP, due dates, billing and collections, and communicate proactively with partners and clients where issues arise.
  • Mentor, motivate and coach junior/intermediate team members towards professional and personal development by setting clear expectations, providing feedback and training.
Skills and Experience
  • CPA (Canadian) designation.
  • 4+ years of relevant, progressive experience at a public accounting firm.
  • Experience managing and reviewing compilation and corporate tax compliance files for owner-managed businesses.
  • Strong working knowledge of Canadian corporate tax compliance, including T2 corporate tax returns and related schedules.
  • Ability to identify common owner-managed business tax planning opportunities and client issues; advanced tax planning experience is not required.
  • Strong client communication skills, including the ability to explain accounting and tax matters clearly to business owners and high-net-worth clients.
  • Proven ability to multi-task and meet competing deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Proven people management, coaching and relationship-building skills.
