We are seeking an experienced
* Assistant Controller
* to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated accounting professional looking to take the next step in their career within a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
Working closely with the Controller, you will oversee the day-to-day accounting operations, support a dependable accounting team, and help ensure the delivery of accurate and timely financial reporting for our clients.
- Supervise the Accounting Department to ensure all functions are performed in accordance with company policies and procedures, the
* Strata Property Act*, the
* Real Estate Services Act*, and all applicable regulatory requirements. - Assist the Controller in managing department workflow, workload allocation, and portfolio assignments to ensure operational efficiency and balanced staff responsibilities.
- Provide day-to-day guidance and support to accounting staff by responding to technical questions, resolving issues, and promoting best practices.
- Assist with the recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and, where appropriate, disciplinary action or termination of accounting staff.
- Coordinate and deliver training and mentoring for new and existing accounting team members.
- Review and approve monthly financial statements prepared for strata corporation clients, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely delivery.
- Prepare monthly financial statements, including payroll processing, for a select portfolio of strata corporations requiring enhanced financial oversight.
- Respond to inquiries from Property Managers regarding budgets, financial statements, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and other accounting matters.
- Process and authorize electronic funds transfers (EFTs), bank transfers, and payment transactions in accordance with company policies and internal controls.
- Set up and maintain client banking information within Yardi Client Central to facilitate electronic payment processing.
- Oversee the timely establishment of bank accounts for all new strata corporation clients, ensuring accounts are operational by the first day of management.
- Ensure bank accounts for terminated management contracts are closed within one month of the effective termination date.
- Monitor and ensure all Receiver General remittances, including payroll source deductions and other CRA payments, are processed accurately and submitted on time.
- Maintain compliance with trust accounting requirements, internal controls, and applicable legislation.
- Serve as the primary backup to the Controller during periods of absence, ensuring continuity of accounting operations.
- Assist the Controller and senior management with special projects, process improvements, and other initiatives as assigned.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy, and departmental efficiency.
- 3+ years experience in accounting roles with a strong understanding of Canadian accounting principles and practices is essential for this position.
- Experience in strata property management, real estate, trust accounting, or property management accounting is considered a strong asset.
- CPA designation or actively pursuing completion of the CPA program is preferred.
- Proficiency in accounting software including Yardi Voyager is an asset.
- Hands-on experience managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and account reconciliation processes.
- Progressive experience managing a team of 10-20 staff is a strong asset.
- Ability to perform detailed account analysis and identify variances or issues efficiently.
