Layout Clerk
About the Position:
The Layout Clerk is responsible for the timely and accurate processing of incoming samples into the analysis stream. The priority is to receive and organize samples, verify client information, and enter pertinent data into the laboratory data systems. The role involves working independently and as part of a team, emphasizing quality and efficiency in service to clients.
- Coordinate day-to-day activities of the sample reception/layout clerks.
- Act as the primary point of contact for sample reception inquiries from lab staff and Account Managers.
- Organize and prioritize incoming work based on holding times, rush TAT, and other criteria.
- Coordinate subcontract samples that require delivery to Shipping on a daily basis.
- Provide high-level customer service to clients and couriers.
- Receive samples and communicate with couriers.
- Record sample temperatures and conditions on delivery.
- Complete required paperwork for sample analysis requests and processing.
- Notify Client Service representatives of non‑conformances or rush work.
- Label samples and distribute them to appropriate locations when needed.
- Process samples in a timely manner to meet company turnaround goals.
- Serve as backup Login Clerk (login training required).
- Enter client information, sample identification, and required analysis details.
- Ensure correct due dates and comments are applied to the file.
- Handle rush requests by notifying appropriate lab staff and Account Managers.
- Print labels for all sample containers.
- Generate paperwork for internal or external sublet analyses.
- Transfer completed files, printed labels, and sublet paperwork to a Sample Layout Clerk for final labeling.
- Use correct methods in accordance with established procedures and schedules, ensuring analytical quality.
- Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
- Good English communication skills (auditory, verbal, written, and reading).
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and general computer skills.
- Accurate and efficient data entry skills.
- Well‑organized with the ability to meet strict deadlines.
- Process‑oriented with critical thinking in ambiguous situations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required.
- Commitment to excellence and a client‑focused attitude.
- Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Some experience in a fast‑paced production or preparation environment.
- Knowledge of high school science courses and/or basic laboratory safety is an asset.
- Experience working with chemicals or in a laboratory setting (e.g., school) is an asset, but not required.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. (23 kg) regularly and carry for short distances.
Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves, etc., when required.
Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks.
Ability to stand for up to a full shift.
Ability to sit at a desk and perform general office work, including periodic sedentary responsibilities.
Potential exposure to unpleasant fumes.
Work schedule includes day, afternoon, and graveyard shifts, including weekends, as ALS operates 24/7.
- Estimated hourly pay of $21.12 CAD (actual compensation varies by skills, experience, education, and training).
