Position Summary
BCIT’s
School of Construction and the Environment is seeking a
temporary, full-time (1.0 FTE) Faculty, Carpentry. We invite you to join BCIT’s trades training team. We are currently seeking applications from individuals that are Red Seal certified in the Carpentry Trade and are interested in sharing their knowledge and skills with both Foundation students (future workers) and industry apprentices. Please note: This opportunity does have the potential of leading to full-time employment once the successful candidate has successfully completed a probationary period. Initial contract is for 3 months. Duties & Responsibilities DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Classroom instruction to apprentice, entry-level or Industry Services students;Shop and laboratory instruction and supervision;Instructional counseling, evaluation and preparation;Administrative responsibilities, including assignments, examination marking, and student evaluation;Other duties directly related to the instruction of trades and vocational programs;Curriculum maintenance and program enhancement;Input into development of modifications to workshop and instructional areas.Preparing and presenting classroom lectures; practical demonstrations, and working collectively with the Carpentry Chief Instructor.This position is not just about teaching Carpentry and related concepts, it requires a person willing to:Motivate students to learn,Teach employability skills and assist with time management, and spend the extra effort with students who are struggling, and challenge the students who are excelling.A commitment to teaching excellence and preparation of outstanding graduates is foremost.Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Carpentry Certificate of Qualification and Certificate of Apprenticeship with an Inter-Provincial Red Seal endorsement.Minimum of five years’ current work experience as a journeyperson on a variety of both residential and Hi-rise/commercial construction as well as interior finishingPreferred Qualifications:Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to demonstrating superior shop and communication skills, have experience in one or more of the following areas:
Supervisory experience and an understanding of Building Envelope construction issues would be an asset Effective command of the English language – both written and oral Ability to work as part of a team and develop a collegial environment Effective interpersonal skills and a strong desire to teach Previous teaching experience is an asset Experience working with apprentices in a supervisory role Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to develop and instruct the curriculum Completion of the Provincial Instructors Diploma Program would be an asset Current computer literacyAdditional Information
