Recreation Instructor; Canoe

Overview

The Parks, Recreation and Culture Department seeks experienced outdoor Contract Canoe Instructors to support community‑based and school‑based programs at Deer Lake. Instructors deliver safe, high‑quality canoe instruction for participants of all ages, ensuring enjoyable and supportive learning environments.

• Plan and deliver creative canoe lessons, group and semi‑private sessions, guided tours, day camps, and school out‑trips.
• Manage participant attendance, prepare program materials, and complete required incident and attendance reporting.
• Address site safety concerns and uphold City policies and safety standards.
• Perform related work as required.

• Post‑secondary education and/or experience in outdoor recreation programs and instruction.
• Hands‑on experience planning, managing, and leading programs for a wide range of ages and skill levels.
• RCABC Flatwater Instructor Certification with a current paid RCABC instructor membership (or equivalent qualification).
• Emergency First Aid with CPR Level C (required). Valid Wilderness First Aid or equivalent 20+ hour first aid certification with CPR Level C (preferred).
• Valid driver’s license for travel between program sites (preferred).
• Exceptional customer service skills.
• Copies of relevant professional certificates, degrees, or tickets will be required at the time of interview.

Pay Rate: $31.52 per hour + 12% in lieu of benefits.

Deer Lake, City of Burnaby.

Contract instructor position. Hours and shifts are based on programmed courses and may vary due to registration levels. Position is seasonal and flexible until October.
