Our purpose – the essence of SFU – is to create and connect knowledge, learning and community for deeper understanding and meaningful impact. We are committed to fostering excellence, innovation, belonging and community in all that we do.
The School of Communication (CMNS) is an interdisciplinary academic unit within the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology (FCAT), dedicated to innovative teaching, research, and student success. Our team supports prospective and current undergraduate students through academic advising, recruitment, student engagement, and transition programming. We collaborate closely with faculty, staff, and campus partners to ensure accurate program information, smooth admissions processes, and meaningful student experiences.
By advancing strategic recruitment and supporting student retention, we contribute to SFU’s goals of inclusive excellence and student-centered education. Our team culture is collaborative, student-focused, and committed to continuous improvement.
The Academic & Student Affairs Advisor plays a central role in supporting the academic success and progression of CMNS undergraduate students. Building on the position’s core mandate to “provide academic advice and administrative support to CMNS undergraduate students” and to “participate in undergraduate program planning,” the Advisor contributes to a smooth student experience from admission through graduation. The role supports long term course planning, assists with graduation processes, and helps maintain accurate enrolment and program data.
Upcoming priorities include enhancing advising resources, supporting scheduling and enrolment management across FCAT campuses, and contributing to improvements in administrative systems. Working closely with faculty, program directors, Student Services, and the School Manager, the Advisor ensures students receive timely, accurate guidance and that program operations run efficiently. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative, student focused environment and enjoys balancing advising, planning, and administrative responsibilities.
The ideal candidate is a student centered professional who communicates clearly, exercises sound judgment, and builds strong relationships with students, faculty, and staff. They bring excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines while maintaining accuracy and discretion. Skilled at interpreting and applying policies, they support students with empathy, particularly those facing academic difficulty or navigating complex processes.
They are technologically proficient, comfortable working with systems such as SIMS, and proactive in identifying improvements to advising and administrative workflows. Above all, they thrive in a collaborative environment and are committed to supporting student success.
