Assistant Instructor, Ecological Restoration
Position Title Assistant Instructor, Ecological Restoration
Position SummaryBCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment is seeking a temporary, full-time (1.0 FTE) Assistant Instructor for the Ecological Restoration MSc and BSc programs. The position entails assisting in the delivery of a range of program content. The successful candidate should have a diverse ecological background, strong field skills, and preferably experience in ecological restoration, environmental science, fish and wildlife management.
BCIT’s MSc and BSc programs in Ecological Restoration are among North America’s very few programs that specialize in this sought-after discipline. These programs provide graduates with a world-class foundation in the fundamental science, applied knowledge, and technical skills needed to restore a broad range of degraded ecosystems. Both programs have been designed to advance the science and practice of ecological restoration.
The MSc and BSc programs are widely renowned for their field-oriented learning and applied research. The BSc is a 2-year program (years 3 and
4). The MSc program is Canada’s only graduate program specializing in ecological restoration. In both the MSc and BSc programs, students work with our many professional partners on a wide range of applied restoration projects, thereby gaining experience in addressing many current environmental challenges. Graduates of both programs have an excellent track record of securing positions with consulting companies, nonprofit organizations, and all levels of government, including First Nations.
General responsibilities will include supporting course- and program-level applied learning, including training students in field skills such as equipment use, managing complex logistics, consulting with BSc and MSc students on developing applied ecological projects, and participating in course assessment. Experience with GIS software and GNSS is a significant advantage.
The position will require supporting several all-day or week-long field trips and assisting with program management (e.g., promoting ER programs, organizing field trips, and revising programs). Other responsibilities will be based on the strengths of the successful candidate and the needs of the program, such as program/course development and course instruction. This position is based in person at BCIT’s Burnaby campus and requires on-campus attendance five days per week.
