Surveying Instructor

Location: Burnaby Campus

Reports To: DAA/Campus Director

Position Overview

Under general supervision, the instructor is responsible for providing instruction and facilitating student learning according to the prescribed curriculum.

Education & Experience
  • The successful candidate should have a minimum of 2 to 3 years of practical field experience in surveying.
  • He/she should have good knowledge in using surveying equipment such as level, total station to perform topographic survey, legal survey and infrastructure layout.
  • Knowledge in GPS will be a plus.
  • Degree, diploma or certification from a recognized university, college or institution relating to the area of instruction.
  • Instructional experience preferred and/or possession of instructor’s certificate / willingness to take additional instructional delivery workshop(s).
Qualifications
  • Registered with ASTTBC as an Engineering Technologist or Technician will be an asset.
  • Able to demonstrate success in innovative or student-centered teaching techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of course learning outcomes an asset.
  • Proficient with educational technology including learning management system.
  • Excellent instructional capability.
  • Able to maintain professionalism and cordiality when working with others.
  • Proficient with all Microsoft Office programs and applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, etc.).
  • Strong proficiency in English.
Specific Duties

Instructors are normally contracted to teach specific courses. The instructor is responsible for the following duties for each course:

  • Preparing a course outline, lesson plans, and exams, and having these available and approved by the appropriate BASC member, as required by College policy.
  • Attending the classroom at the specified hours, teaching the approved Curriculum and managing all student activities.
  • Advising students of learning outcomes, learning activities in advance, and carrying out these plans during each class meeting.
  • Preparing examination material for approval by the BASC member, administering and marking exams, maintaining records, and reporting the final grade of each student to the College within one week of the end of each course.
  • Keeping track of and reporting student attendance as required by College policy.
  • Instructors provide weekly office hours for student consultation.
  • Maintaining and making an e‑mail address available to administrative staff and students, and responding to staff and student messages in a timely manner (Note that student contact information is not for personal use).

Instructors also have the following responsibilities:

  • They observe high ethical standards and fair practices, including observing all College academic policy and the conflict of interest policy.
  • They conduct themselves in a professional manner commensurate to their role as an employee, and representative, of the College in all situations related to their work as an Instructor.
  • They ensure that each student in their class has the opportunity to participate in the instructional activities and learn the required material and be assessed in a fair and accurate manner.
  • They provide as much notice as possible of foreseen absences and assist the College in arranging for a substitute teacher or alternate activities for students.
  • They make effective use of and care for all College property including library materials, AV equipment, and photocopiers.
  • They assist the College in improving the quality of its courses and programs by recommending and providing documentation on changes they feel are necessary to improve the course(s) they teach. At the request of the College, they provide copies of all materials used in courses, including course outlines, lesson plans, handouts, and examinations.

A course evaluation is distributed at the end of every course asking students to comment anonymously on the instructor effectiveness, the course content, and College facilities. Information concerning the instructor becomes a part of the instructor’s personnel file and is considered when the instructor’s contribution to the College is reviewed.
