Salary Range

$31.14 per hour (with wage increments to a max of $34.96 per hour). Salary and wage increments are in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

The Opportunity

Working independently, the Student Life Coordinator is responsible for the overall management, direction, planning, implementation and supervision of Student Life programs that impact the retention and engagement of Douglas College students. The Student Life Coordinator is also responsible for creating and providing programs for the first year experience, student leadership, volunteer and co-curricular programs that support intellectual, personal, and social development of students.

The position works closely with students in promoting engagement and creating a vibrant campus atmosphere and sense of community. Additional responsibilities include safety procedures, scheduling, budget monitoring and marketing/communication for Student Life. Provides exceptional client-centred service on a consistent basis to all client groups.

WHAT IT TAKES
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three years' experience working in the profession of Student Affairs or Student Life or a related Student Services functional area working with an array of students (in first year experience, student leadership, and/or community service learning initiatives). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Excellent communication skills including a good working knowledge of the English language (written and verbal), and a demonstrated ability to speak to small and large groups in informal and formal settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • work, lead and facilitate student groups at the post-secondary level.
    • apply student development literature, theory, and/or best practice to develop programs in the areas of student life and volunteer capacity building, including first year experience programming, student leadership programming, student wellness and community service learning programming.
    • act and communicate in a professional manner with students, administrators, staff, faculty, individual users and groups, and the general public.
    • nurture and develop student leadership potential and create a successful student-centred environment.
    • work with a minimum of supervision.
    • hire and supervise student assistants and volunteers effectively.
    • establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
    • initiate, implement and coordinate activities, programs and services that enhance student leadership development including mentoring programs and community service learning programs
    • contribute to defining and refining a campus culture that provides opportunities for involvement, personal and professional growth for individuals and for student-driven organizations.
