What you’ll do
Distribution Asset Planning has an opportunity for a Senior Engineer to join us in our mission to plan and integrate distributed energy resources, like solar PV and batteries, into our distribution system. The successful candidate will have sound technical knowledge of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) technologies, interconnection standards, and integration and impacts of such technologies onto a utility distribution system and will be based at BC Hydro's Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC.

Specific Duties :

Performs planning and system impact studies to interconnect Distributed Generation to BC Hydro’s Distribution System.

Provides broad engineering expertise in Distributed Energy Resource Technologies, and applies knowledge and experience in multi-discipline engineering principles to address complex system needs, working with other departments to mitigate risks and find solutions that meet specific technical requirements, and business objectives.

Analyzes, interprets, and evaluates technical studies to identify Distribution system and Distribution feeder requirements to reliably and efficiently supply load and host Distributed Generation.

Reviews work of consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results, and adherence to technical requirements, standards and accepted engineering practice.

Manages projects and resources to ensure that work commitments are met.

Represents BC Hydro in discussions with external stakeholders on technical issues; builds trust and strong external relationships and successfully resolves issues in consideration of business objectives, and reputational and financial impacts.

May assign work and give instructions, advice and technical guidance to other engineers and technical support staff.

Develops and maintains effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues in order to resolve issues of concern. Builds influential relationships with key management teams and departments across BC Hydro, along with technical and process groups.

Works under general direction, with work assigned in terms of broadly defined objectives and budget limitations.

Advice of manager is sought in critical areas which impact the work of others.

Completed work is accepted as accurate, with overall plans and recommendations reviewed for feasibility, soundness of judgment and achievement of objectives.

What you bring

A recognized Electrical Engineering degree and registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).

A minimum of 8 years of progressive electrical engineering experience focused in the area of planning, engineering, and design of distribution systems and integration of Distributed Energy Resources. Candidates with less experience are also encouraged to apply, as they may be considered for a position that aligns with their qualifications.

Ability to analyze and resolve challenging and unusual engineering problems with considerable independence and understand and appreciate implications of costs, operability and safety.

Demonstrated organizational, collaboration, project management skills including cost control and project administration.

Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills including the ability to write reports and senior management briefings, make presentations to technical and non-technical audiences, and liaise with peers and experts in BC Hydro and externally.

Demonstrated or recognized expertise in distribution system planning, distributed generation, distributed energy resource integration, and engineering for electric utility.
