Senior Engineer, Water & Sewer
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Infrastructure, the Senior Engineer, Water and Sewer provides senior-level professional and strategic leadership for the long-term planning, management, and renewal of the City’s water and sewer systems. The position is responsible for overseeing professional engineering work and directing the work of staff and external consultants to ensure alignment with corporate objectives, service levels, and regulatory requirements.
The role leads the development of utility design standards, asset management strategies, water conservation initiatives, and long-range capital planning for water and sewer infrastructure. As the City’s technical authority in water and sewer systems, the Senior Engineer provides expert advice on complex planning, infrastructure, and growth-related matters, working collaboratively with consultants, Operations and Maintenance staff, administrative teams, and external agencies.
The position directs and oversees engineering studies, system assessments, and technical reporting related to water and sewer infrastructure, including capacity analysis, inspection and monitoring programs, and asset management improvement initiatives. The Senior Engineer prepares clear, well-supported recommendations to inform senior management decision-making and guide sustainable infrastructure investment. This role provides senior-level oversight of development servicing requirements, identifying infrastructure upgrades needed to support growth in a coordinated and long-term manner.
The Senior Engineer leads and mentors a small professional and technical team engaged in infrastructure planning and rehabilitation programs, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include University degree in Engineering and registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) and a minimum of 15 years of related engineering experience, including demonstrated leadership in infrastructure or utility planning, asset management, and system analysis. Ability to work independently, to communicate clearly and effectively, be organized and work collaboratively with other team members.
Supervisory experience and a Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia would be considered an asset.
