From identifying and coordinating the repair, replacement, or abatement of hazardous building materials to supporting remediation and design with our Environmental Services and Buildings Engineering groups, our work makes a tangible impact every day.

Stantec is currently seeking a Junior Environmental Technologist to join our Hazmat and Indoor Air Quality team in British Columbia. This is a great opportunity for an early-level professional who wants hands-on field experience, exposure to a variety of occupational and health and safety-related projects, and the chance to grow within a respected, multidisciplinary firm.

Responsibilities

As part of the Hazmat and Indoor Air Quality team, your work will include a diverse mix of field and office responsibilities, such as:

  • Understanding the application of occupational health and safety principles and regulations, especially as they relate to industrial hygiene and hazardous materials

  • Planning and supporting hazardous materials surveys and assessments in a variety of environments

  • Collecting samples for asbestos, metals (e.g. lead), PCBs, microbials, and other hazardous substances

  • Estimating quantities of hazardous materials for the purposes of abatement project planning.

  • Conducting hazardous materials condition assessments.

  • Conducting hazardous material abatement/remediation inspections and air monitoring

  • Conducting indoor air quality assessments and testing

  • Conducting industrial hygiene assessments and testing

  • Assisting with the operation and calibration of air quality testing equipment

  • Contributing to the development of detailed technical reports, hazardous materials management plans, safe work procedures, abatement specifications, and exposure control plans

  • Assisting with the preparation of proposals for the above-noted types of projects

  • Collaborating with project teams to meet schedules and client expectations

  • Evening and weekend work as required

  • Frequent travel within Canada (primarily Western and Northern Canada) and potentially the U.S. as required

  • Qualifications

  • Post-secondary training, course work, diploma or degree pertaining to environmental technology or sciences, building sciences, occupational health and safety and/or occupational/industrial hygiene

  • 1–2 years of relevant field or technical experience

  • A valid WorkSafeBC Level S Asbestos Certificate would be an asset

  • General knowledge of buildings, building systems and building construction

  • Experience or knowledge pertaining to occupational/industrial hygiene, occupational health & safety regulations and/or the hazardous materials abatement industry would be an asset

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including proficient MS Office skills

  • Strong note-taking skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to work on your own as well as in a team environment is crucial

  • Willingness to work out of town for up to 50% of the time

  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle is required

  • Ability to obtain mandatory federal government “Reliability Status” security…
