Your OpportunityOur Building Specialty Services group is seeking a Building Science Engineer to guide our team and provide excellence in business practices and technical leadership in the building science industry.
YourKey Responsibilities
- This role is one of technical and business leadership involved with many aspects of what our team does daily, including building envelope design, 3rd‑party design review, envelope commissioning, and construction services for both rehabilitation and new construction projects.
- Lead and drive this service line forward from a business perspective within the Building Specialty Services Business Unit in Burnaby, BC.
- Define scope of complex services, establish design criteria, and review design documents, shop drawings, and trade submittals for conformance to best building practices (water intrusion, air leakage, vapor diffusion, thermal performance, differential movement).
- Prepare and review contract drawings and specifications with the project team.
- Undertake field reviews of new‑construction and rehabilitation projects to confirm envelope assemblies comply with approved mock‑ups and design documents.
- Prepare site‑visit reports, maintain a database of outstanding deficiencies, and track their resolution.
- Conduct field testing to verify compliance with performance standards (water infiltration, air leakage) and report results.
- Interface with architects, general contractors, and subcontractors.
- Provide expert advice on design processes and construction methods.
- Perform forensic analysis of envelope failures.
- Deliver presentations to stakeholders, including legal professionals, contractors, and consultants.
- Lead and manage several direct reports and project teams of one to five staff.
- Serve as a technical lead on assigned projects, conduct research, write technical papers, and mentor staff.
- Represent Stantec publicly by delivering technical presentations and contributing thought leadership within the building science community.
- Write proposals for new work and lead business‑development opportunities.
- Mentor and train entry‑level staff in both technical and non‑technical skills.
- Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of Bluebeam, CAD, and/or Revit.
- Project‑management skills for concurrent projects with budgets above $200,000.
- Practical knowledge of energy code, rain‑screen principles, air barriers, and thermal performance.
- Effective team‑player with a strong customer‑service commitment.
- Ability to travel regionally on a weekly basis.
- Ready to work on active construction sites.
- Valid driver’s license and clean motor‑vehicle record.
- Registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia (P.Eng).
- Minimum 10 years of experience assessing, detailing, testing, or constructing building envelope systems.
- Strong understanding of advanced flashing, waterproofing, roofing, cladding, rain screens, air barriers, and related systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Science with a background in Building Science.
