Job Overview

In this high-impact role, the Electrolyzer Development Engineer / Technologist will act as the vital link between cutting-edge research and real-world application, transforming breakthrough lab discoveries into pilot-scale, commercially viable systems. Collaborating across R&D and engineering, you’ll support benchtop electrochemical reactor testing as well as support the assembly and testing of our prototype electrolyzer.

The ideal candidate will be versatile and have a range of experience with prototype electrolyzers, flow batteries or fuel cell stack assemblies; a solid understanding in electrochemistry, electrolyzers and the core components of an electrolyzer; an understanding of electrochemical cell testing methods, and electrolyser performance and durability optimization. You thrive in a fast paced, dynamic, mission-driven environment and enjoy hands-on problem solving.

Your experience with electrochemical systems and cell testing will directly shape next-generation technologies that convert CO₂ into valuable products, turning a global challenge into a powerful opportunity. This is more than a technical role; it’s a chance to build and deploy transformative systems that redefine how the world produces chemicals and accelerate the path to a truly sustainable future.

Duties
  • Manage build of Anodyne prototype electrolyzer stacks.
  • Identify methods to improve stack assembly (fixtures, control methods, tools).
  • Develop assembly procedures.
  • Execute benchtop electrolyzer stack testing: including system setup, stack assembly, testing, rigorous data collection and report writing to evaluate performance and inform design decisions.
  • Prepare standard operating procedures.
  • Make continuous improvements to stack test bench, including data collection and controls control.
  • Provide support to setting up, operating, and maintaining multiple benchtop electrochemical reactors (including H-Cells, beaker cells, etc.).
  • Support electrochemical characterisation on benchtop cells using techniques such as (but not limited to) cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear sweep voltammetry, etc.
  • Contribute to performance, degradation and failure mechanism studies.
  • Contribute to development of future generation electrolyzers, including scaling studies, flow field development, cost reduction.
Requirements
  • BEng/BASc (or Technologist Diploma) in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience working with electrochemical, or chemical process systems, within an industrial and/or academic environment.
  • Experience handling chemicals and operating chemical process equipment.
  • Experience building and operating benchtop to prototype-size chemical process systems, including fluid controls, instrumentation and data logging.
  • Experience assembling, disassembling and installing large stacks, or large equipment would be considered an asset.
  • Highly detail-oriented, with excellent organisational skills and a commitment to accurate data collection, documentation, and record-keeping.
  • Familiarity with H-Cells, beaker cells would be considered an asset.
  • Effective communicator, with strong written and verbal skills and the ability to collaborate seamlessly across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience assembling piping systems, fabricating jigs or building structures would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects autonomously.

Anodyne has two offices and the candidate will need to be able to work at both the Annacis Island location and the Burnaby location.
