Sr. Engineer - Substation Asset Management

Responsibilities

This position is located in the Substation Asset Management & Planning team within Substation Growth & Sustainment. The role focuses on creating strategic plans for the maintenance of substation assets to maximize lifecycle value, designing and launching programs/projects to implement those plans, and ensuring maintenance costs and capital investments are optimized while meeting performance targets and managing acceptable risk levels. Decisions will align with the health of the BC Hydro fleet, the specific facility’s role, and available capital and resources.

• Develop annual sustain and maintenance work plans and budgets in line with strategies and investment plans; balance and prioritize work, collaborate with Integrated Planning groups on alternatives and impacts, and assign the work to Program and Contract Management or Capital Infrastructure Project Delivery for execution.
• Create a long‑term (2 to 10 years) Asset Maintain/Sustain Investment Plan and rolling budget based on asset condition, health, and stakeholder performance expectations.
• Apply sound Asset Management principles to optimize value for customers and ratepayers while meeting business needs.
• Consult with operational, design, project, and other groups to ensure maintenance and sustaining capital issues are represented and considered; participate in planning, major projects, initiatives, and studies.
• Report on and evaluate station and system outages and asset failures.
• Maintain current asset plans, strategies, and maintenance standards; track ongoing performance and work delivery.
• Develop and maintain spare and replacement strategies, support emergency plan development, and respond to major system events in a planning capacity.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety requirements, including Work Safe BC and environmental mandates (e.g., asbestos, confined space, fall arrest, PCB removal).
• Support BC Hydro’s approach to Mandatory Reliability Standards and ensure MRS requirements are met for substations.
• Support broader corporate requirements such as the Integrated Resource Plan and BC Hydro’s electrification goals and targets.
• Lead cross‑functional asset management initiatives.

• Graduated with an Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree recognized by Canadian universities.
• Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC.
• A minimum of eight (8) years of experience—preferably with substation work in an electric utility.
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
• Demonstrated knowledge of NERC Mandatory Reliability Standards and Asset Management philosophies.
• Experience in planning, design, maintenance, or testing & commissioning of substation assets.
• Ability to coordinate multiple programs/projects and plan/manage project resources; PMP certification is an asset.
• Experience managing equipment maintenance, repair, and modification in a large electric utility; project management experience is an asset.
• Proven ability to implement sustainable changes that add clear value to the business.
• Strong analytical, planning, and business management skills.
