Senior Civil/ Geotechnical Engineer

Location: Burnaby, BC
Duration: 12-Month Contract
Work Arrangement: On-Site Initially, with Potential for Hybrid
Travel: Throughout BC as Required

Match Box Consulting Group is seeking a Senior Civil/ Geotechnical Engineer to support one of British Columbia’s largest utility providers. This role will focus on geotechnical assessment, foundation design, construction support, and field engineering for critical utility infrastructure projects across the province.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise combined with practical construction knowledge and the ability to serve as Professional of Record (PoR) on complex engineering assignments.

Responsibilities
  • Perform geotechnical assessments, engineering design, and construction support for utility infrastructure projects.
  • Develop and review geotechnical foundation designs in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and engineering practices.
  • Serve as Professional of Record (PoR), assessing field conditions and developing practical engineering solutions.
  • Support construction staging, temporary works, excavation support systems, and constructability reviews.
  • Conduct engineering analysis using Geo Studio, gINT/Open Ground, and other industry-standard geotechnical software.
  • Provide field engineering support and participate in site investigations and construction activities.
  • Review technical documentation, engineering calculations, drawings, reports, and construction requirements.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, contractors, project stakeholders, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
  • Support permitting activities and ensure designs consider applicable environmental and field safety requirements.
  • Apply EGBC professional practice requirements, including quality management, engineering reviews, document control, and records management.
  • Prepare technical reports and communicate engineering recommendations to project stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering from a recognized Canadian university.
  • Registered P.Eng. (Civil/Geotechnical) in good standing with EGBC.
  • Minimum 8 years of civil/geotechnical engineering experience in Canada.
  • Strong experience with geotechnical assessment, foundation design, and construction support.
  • Demonstrated experience with construction staging, temporary works, excavation support, and constructability reviews.
  • Strong knowledge of construction practices in British Columbia.
  • Experience using Geo Studio, gINT/Open Ground, or similar geotechnical analysis and design software.
  • Understanding of applicable codes, standards, permitting processes, and requirements of Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
  • Strong understanding of field safety and environmental considerations associated with construction activities.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong technical report writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence.
  • Access to a valid EGBC Permit to Practice as required.
Nice to Have
  • Previous experience supporting a Canadian utility owner.
  • Geohazard assessment experience.
  • Trenchless design knowledge.
  • Experience with geotechnical testing equipment.
  • Experience with underground and overhead distribution infrastructure.
  • Geotechnical assessment and construction support for maintenance holes, vaults, duct banks, and other underground utility infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with MMCD, MoTT Utilities Manual, CoV Utilities Design Manual, and associated permitting requirements.
  • Experience with seismic and ground improvement design.
