D-Wave is seeking a Cryogenics Engineer II to join our Burnaby hardware team and work hands‑on with our quantum computers. You will design, build, test, and implement cryogenic hardware while improving the performance and reliability of existing systems. Your work will span engineering analysis, experiments, troubleshooting, and verification of design changes.
You will collaborate with mechanical, electrical, processor development, software, and operations teams to turn technical findings into reliable designs and operating improvements. At the Engineer II level, you will independently drive assigned projects from planning through implementation and verification, and clearly communicate your methods, results, and recommendations.
What you'll do- Design, prototype, test, and refine cryogenic components and subsystems, taking assigned work from concept through documented verification.
- Plan and execute experiments to characterize cryogenic system performance and evaluate proposed improvements.
- Analyze operating and test data to identify performance limits, investigate faults, and guide design decisions.
- Troubleshoot thermal, vacuum, gas handling, instrumentation, and control issues through measurement and hands‑on work.
- Support integration and testing of new hardware, working with other engineering teams to resolve system‑level issues.
- Prepare design records, test plans, procedures, and technical reports that allow others to build on your work.
- Collaborate and contribute thoughts, ideas, culture, and energy to the team.
- Travel to customer and company sites as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent training and experience.
- 3+ years relevant experience with cryogenic equipment or systems, including vacuum and gas handling equipment and leak detection.
- Experience designing, testing, and implementing hardware changes in a product development or production environment through an engineering change control process.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to apply engineering fundamentals and measured data to diagnose problems and evaluate design tradeoffs.
- Demonstrated ability to drive assigned technical work independently and communicate findings clearly.
- Initiative and the ability to manage changing priorities.
- Experience with dilution refrigerators, millikelvin systems, or pulse tube cryocoolers.
- Experience with helium circuits, thermal instrumentation, or cryogenic controls.
- Experience analyzing time‑series data or using Python for engineering analysis.
- Familiarity with materials, fabrication, and assembly methods for cryogenic and high‑vacuum hardware.
- Experience troubleshooting and supporting complex multidisciplinary systems.
- Current or eligible registration as an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer…
