Overview
This position works in the Plan Checking organizational unit. The City of Burnaby is recruiting for a Plan Checker 1, Plan Checker 2, or Building Technologist with ample opportunity for professional development and advancement. The work includes technical and clerical tasks of checking building plans for adherence to the building code, regulations and municipal bylaw requirements. General supervision is received from a supervisor who reviews work to ensure conformance with departmental policies and procedures.
A Plan Checker 1 examines plans for proposed single and two‑family dwellings and issues building permits when applicable regulations are satisfied. The role becomes more complex as a Plan Checker 2, dealing with Part 9 buildings, and further expands for a Building Technologist, who examines moderate to complex Part 3 buildings, coordinates permit processing, interprets building codes, and assists junior plan checkers.
ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities for any of these positions include preparing routine correspondence, preparing reports related to activities, maintaining records and storing plans, and performing related work as required. The role may also involve reviewing plans for complex constructions, alterations, and additions, coordinating the processing of permit applications, providing interpretation of building codes, regulations, bylaws, and City planning guidelines, and assisting junior plan checkers.
QualificationsAll positions require knowledge of the preparation and use of building plans and specifications, the ability to interpret building construction plans rapidly and accurately, perform mathematical calculations, understand and execute oral and written instructions, deal tactfully with contacts, and prepare routine correspondence and reports. Sound knowledge of municipal bylaws, provincial building code, regulations, construction practices and materials is required.
Graduation from an Institute of Technology with a diploma in Building Technology, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required qualifications:
- Plan Checker 1:
Building Officials’ Association of British Columbia Level 1 Qualification or enrollment in Level 1 BOIT and qualification within 12 months. - Plan Checker 2:
Level 2 Qualification or enrollment in Level 2 BOIT and qualification within 18 months. - Building Technologist:
Level 3 Qualification or enrollment in Level 3 BOIT and qualification within 24 months.
All positions require a Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia.
SalaryPLAN CHECKER 1: $5,719 – $6,730/month (2024 rates)
PLAN CHECK 2: $6,200 – $7,319/month (2024 rates)
BUILDING TECHNOLOGIST: $6,730 – $7,946/month (2024 rates)
Employment DetailsThis is a temporary full‑time position until December 31, 2026.
