Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Supervisor, Nuclear Medicine, the Nuclear Medicine Technologist practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice and the vision and values of the department within Fraser Health. The Technologist performs diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures in accordance with departmental policies. Duties include preparing patients for examination, operating nuclear medicine equipment, monitoring patients during procedures, preparing and dispensing radiopharmaceuticals, performing routine quality control tests on imaging equipment, monitoring the area with appropriate detection devices and disposing of radioactive substances and contaminated items following established guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a full range of technical work including correlating clinical history with examinations, explaining tests, positioning patients, administering radiopharmaceuticals by intravenous injection, inhalation or orally, and operating Nuclear Medicine cameras, computers and counting equipment in accordance with standards and procedures.
  • Performs patient care duties before, during and after examinations, including monitoring IV lines, oxygen delivery, urinary catheter systems, ECGs, blood pressure, and responding to emergencies per policies; CPR may be required in emergencies.
  • Manages radioactive materials: receiving, measuring, dispensing, recording, storing and disposing in compliance with license regulations; reports hazards; monitors areas; actively uses ALARA principles.
  • Prepares diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals under aseptic and pyrogen-free conditions; dispenses patient doses; performs quality control and documents accordingly.
  • Prepares, dispenses and administers radioactive therapeutic agents under aseptic conditions; performs quality control and documentation.
  • Prepares leukocyte labelling per current regulations; performs quality control and documentation.
  • Performs non-imaging in-vivo and in-vitro Nuclear Medicine procedures and interventional pharmacologic agent preparation as required.
  • Completes records in patient information systems and ensures correct exams are recorded for billing and workload.
  • Performs administrative duties including entering patient demographics, ordering supplies and monitoring stock levels.
  • Assesses and triages patients to reflect workflow changes or camera suitability based on patient conditions.
