Position OverviewPlanning & Design Technologist 1 – Full‑time, regular employment. Salary $3,104.00 biweekly. Posting ends October 31, 2025.
This role is responsible for planning the installation of gas supply projects for customers (builders, developers, Fortis
BC departments). Using established service, product definitions and pricing to produce the customer contract. The position processes routine project requests professionally and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Coordinate projects, including defining customer requirements, creating and maintaining customer data, ensuring service product requirements are collected, explaining Fortis
BC processes and procedures to customers, selecting appropriate service products and pricing, conveying permit requirements, informing customers of pricing, scheduling work and creating work orders. - Attend meetings with customers and conduct site visits as required.
- Process jobs, including pipe sizing up to 219 mm, metering requirements with load profiles less than 400 cubic metres per hour, all distribution pressure system work and intermediate pressure service work.
- Review foreign utility data, legal land base considerations and geography to determine appropriate gas layout and depth in accordance with Fortis
BC standards, complete electronic layout or engineering drawings, confirm and update pipe sizing, identify and obtain required approvals and prerequisites, requisition inventoried materials and manufactured items, complete detailed estimates, utilize economic test tools to determine pricing of installations and explain Fortis
BC procedures, policies, rate processes and regulations to customers. - Build and maintain customer relations, respond to inquiries regarding installation costs, bill calculations and scheduling, act as primary contact for premium rated builders/developers and internal/external customers.
- Respond to operational and maintenance issues including overbuilds, meter protection, metering consolidations, commercial/industrial metering assembly upgrades, corrosion maintenance, IP service line additions/removals, main valve lowerings and system maintenance requirements.
- Provide direction to Planning and Design Technicians and Operations Support Representatives within the department.
- Technology diploma from an accredited post‑secondary institution in a directly related field. Must be registered or eligible for registration with ASTTBC.
- Two (2) years of directly related, relevant work experience.
- Working knowledge of computer system operations, environment and peripherals and various applications software in use in the department (SAP & suite of MS Office products).
- Strong organizational skills – ability to multi‑task, prioritize and work under pressure during peak workload periods to meet tight deadlines; ability to work independently.
- Excellent communication skills – telephone handling, resolving difficult situations with tact and diplomacy; professional manner with internal and external contacts.
- Analytical and decision‑making skills; ability to analyze and resolve technical problems, understanding implications of costs, risks, operability and safety.
- Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver’s license.
