  • Current active practising or provisional registration with British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwifes (BCCNM)
  • Current CPR certification
  • Commit to a comprehensive education program
  • A commitment to a minimum of 18 month regular full‑time or part‑time FH employment in the specialty area upon successful completion of the program
  • An agreement to attend an orientation session at an educational institution for applicable specialty program
  • An agreement to travel to an appropriate site/campus and to clinical practice areas (mileage reimbursement per HEABC/BCNU Letter of Understanding on Specialty Education)
  • An agreement to allow the education institution to release student progress information (complete/ incomplete/ withdrawn) to the FH Specialty Education division of Professional Practice
About the Program

In the Perioperative area of practice, nurses provide care to patients who are having operative or other invasive procedures. Perioperative nurses work closely with the surgical team to deliver direct nursing care to patients within the Operating Room that include, assessing patients physical and psycho‑social needs, evaluating and coordinating nursing care, and scrubbing and circulating duties and participating in identifying and reducing risk factors that may impact patient care.

In this 15‑week in‑house Association of peri Operative Registered Nurses (AORN) program, nurses are trained via hybrid model with online modules established by AORN. Nurses in this program will receive hands‑on training in the Operating Room throughout the duration of the program, practice in the scrub and circulating role, followed by a preceptorship to support consolidation. AORN will prepare nurses for practice in a variety of Perioperative settings, practice and theory required to assess the needs and personalizing the care of individuals throughout the phases of their perioperative experience.

The Royal Columbian Hospital is well underway with phase two slated to open soon!
RCH Redevelopment

Highlights for the three‑phase redevelopment project include:
  • A new and larger Emergency Department will have more treatment spaces and a satellite medical imaging unit
  • More operating rooms and interventional radiology and cardiac suites on a surgical and interventional ‘superfloor’
  • More beds for intensive care, cardiac intensive care, obstetrical, and medical/ surgical patients
  • Larger maternity unit joined to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

  • 350+ underground parkade, new main entrance, and rooftop heliport
Detailed Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, and working collaboratively and in partnership with the interprofessional care team in the provision of person‑centered care, the Registered nurse provides direct patient care by assessing, planning, providing and evaluating nursing care to patients.

The purpose of this position is to provide qualified registered nurses the opportunity to consolidate their skills by rotating through a specialty nursing unit(s) prior to and/or during the undertaking of post graduate course work applicable to the relevant specialty nursing unit(s). As such, successful applicants will be expected to participate in and successfully complete the applicable post graduate specialty nursing courses/program within the agreed‑to time frames.
