The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-phase project that will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health care campus. Phase one is slated to open in spring 2025 and phase two in 2030.

Burnaby Hospital plays an essential role to those living in the community by delivering a variety of health care services. Services and specialties include emergency medicine, intermediate-level critical care, medical imaging, internal medicine, hospitalist medicine, geriatric medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, palliative, psychiatry, oncology, outpatient clinics, and an extensive surgery program with anesthesia, orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, urology and plastics specialties.

We are currently hiring for a Registered Nurse, Transition Line (Specialty Nursing) to join our Emergency team at Burnaby Hospital located in Burnaby, B.C.

This is a Relief Full-Time position available until May 2027, or until return of incumbent.

Detailed Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, and working collaboratively and in partnership with the interprofessional care team in the provision of person-centered care, the Registered Nurse provides direct patient care by assessing, planning, providing and evaluating nursing care to patients.

The purpose of this position is to provide qualified registered nurses the opportunity to consolidate their skills by rotating through a specialty nursing unit(s) prior to and/or during the undertaking of post graduate course work applicable to the relevant specialty nursing unit(s). As such, successful applicants will be expected to participate in and successfully complete the applicable post graduate specialty nursing courses/program within the agreed-to time frames.

Responsibilities
  • Assess patients and collect information from a variety of sources using observation, communication, data review and physical assessment. Make a nursing diagnosis of the patient's condition and determine whether the condition can be improved or resolved by an appropriate nursing intervention. Plan, perform and evaluate nursing interventions and care.
  • Collaborate with patients and their families/caregivers in developing the care plan and encourage family participation in the development, implementation and ongoing modification of the care plan.
  • Participate in the care and discharge planning process for patients on admission by ensuring the care plan is established, implemented, and evaluated effectively, updating the care plan in a timely manner, and intervening as appropriate, collaborating with the interprofessional care team to ensure comprehensive care planning and delivery, and collaborating and communicating with the Patient Care Coordinator on issues that will affect the care/discharge plan.
  • Coordinate nursing care for the patient; set priorities, assign and delegate tasks to support staff, and make referrals to the interprofessional care team according to established protocols and practice standards.
  • Collaborate with members of the interprofessional care team including Physicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, Patient Care Coordinator, Clinical Nurse Educators, and other health care professionals/providers in the identification and resolution of issues, adjustments to care plans as required, and in regard to changes in patient condition.
  • Teach patients and families/caregivers about illness prevention, health restoration and health maintenance to help patients accomplish their health care goals. Assess learning needs of the patient and family/caregiver; provide information and demonstration of care activities to support self-care and the discharge plan.
