Registered Nurse, Emergency - Burnaby Hospital

Job summary and context for Burnaby Hospital Emergency Department redevelopment project. Phase one opens Spring 2025; phase two in 2030. The department offers expanded treatment spaces, a new health care pavilion, new operating rooms and recovery spaces, an acute care tower, medical imaging, and a new BC Cancer Centre as part of the redevelopment. The salary range for this position is CAD $41.42 - $59.52 per hour.

Detailed overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Fraser Health Mission and Values, the Registered Nurse provides direct patient care in the Emergency Department by assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating nursing care.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients and gather information; perform nursing assessments, develop care plans, implement interventions and evaluate outcomes.
  • Collaborate with patients and families in developing care plans and support self-care and discharge planning.
  • Coordinate nursing care, set priorities, delegate tasks, and refer to the interprofessional care team as needed.
  • Collaborate with Physicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, and other health care professionals to adapt care plans to patient needs.
  • Educate patients and families about illness prevention, health restoration, and health maintenance.
  • Discuss referrals to appropriate health care/community services in collaboration with the care team.
  • Document assessments, interventions, responses, outcomes, and referrals per Fraser Health procedures.
  • Participate in committees, care conferences and quality improvement activities; pursue continuing education and maintain clinical competence.
  • Act as a preceptor or mentor to new nursing staff and students when assigned.
  • Provide feedback to management on program effectiveness, decision support tools, and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Completion of applicable post-graduate coursework in emergency, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience in emergency.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessment and provide nursing care based on clinical reasoning.
  • Effective communication with patients, families, staff and the interprofessional care team using various modes.
  • Ability to promote person-centered care with empathy and cultural safety.
  • Data synthesis and problem-solving using multiple information sources.
  • Ability to teach patients and families about health topics and self-care.
  • Organizational and prioritization skills; collaborative teamwork.
  • Evidence-informed practice and the use of relevant information and equipment.
  • Proficiency with related computer applications and equipment; physical ability to perform the duties.
