Detailed Overview

In accordance with British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, the Registered Nurse, Perinatal provides direct patient care to childbearing patients and their families during the intra, postpartum and high risk antepartum periods. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, providing, and evaluating nursing care to patients in a perinatal clinical unit.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct a comprehensive nursing assessment of the patient and unborn baby on admission and at regular intervals.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, physicians, and inter‑professional team in developing, implementing, and modifying optimal care plans.
  • Participate in care and discharge planning, ensuring effective implementation and coordination with the inter‑professional team.
  • Coordinate nursing care and make referrals to the inter‑professional team according to protocols and standards.
  • Provide education to patients and families on pregnancy, birth experience, postpartum, newborn care, and parenting.
  • Plan and discuss referral information with patients and families, initiating appropriate referrals.
  • Document assessments, diagnoses, interventions, outcomes, and referrals per practice standards.
  • Attend in‑service and educational programs, maintaining clinical competence.
  • Act as a preceptor or mentor for new nursing staff and students.
  • Provide feedback on patient care programs and policies to management.
  • Participate in quality improvement, risk management, and safety reporting.
  • Participate in program and professional committees, conferences, and councils as assigned.
  • Participate in research and special projects, collecting and analyzing data.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications
    • Graduate from an approved School of Nursing.
    • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the BCCNM.
    • One year recent related clinical perinatal nursing experience in the designated area, with completion of postgraduate basic coursework and/or certification in perinatal nursing, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
    • Current Basic Rescuer (Level

      C) and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) certificates.
    Skills and Abilities
    • Complete initial and ongoing patient assessment and apply maternal/fetal/newborn theory to provide appropriate interventions.
    • Recognize acuity changes.

    • Promote person‑centered care, empathy, cultural sensitivity, and patient advocacy.
