Detailed Overview
Depending on the assigned clinical area within the Ambulatory Care Unit, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) may be required to be competent in multiple clinical settings. This job description addresses various scenarios where nurses are required to work in one or more areas requiring advanced training and experience.

In accordance with established vision and values of the organization, the LPN practices to full scope as per the Standards of Practice outlined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), as well as within a client and family-centered care model approach. Working in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, the LPN performs assessments, plans, implements and provides personal and nursing care to clients, according to organizational policies, procedures, standards, and unit specific protocols.

The scope or extent of the skills that the LPN performs varies according to the predictability of the outcome for a given client population.

Responsibilities

Assesses and monitors client and family’s actual and potential strengths and limitations including physiological, psychological, socio-cultural, and spiritual needs. Where appropriate, encourages client participation in activities of daily living. Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with the client and significant others using interpersonal and interviewing techniques ensuring client choice and autonomy in decision-making and care planning.

Contributes to the development and ongoing changes to the individualized plan of care, including attending and providing input into multidisciplinary care planning meetings and family conferences. Advocates for the interest of the client and family.

Upon completion of formal post-basic education and training, performs technical skills and physician support within the procedure room, according to scope of practice including a team nursing approach.

Administers oral, subcutaneous, and intramuscular medications in accordance with scope of practice, organizational and pharmaceutical policies and procedures.

Performs peripheral intravenous (IV) catheter insertion, provides maintenance of IV infusions by assessing the catheter insertion site and monitoring flow rate, and discontinues IV access, as per physician orders.

Performs nursing procedures and interventions and monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the procedures and interventions. Procedures include head to toe assessments, airway management, nutrition management, infusion management, catheterizations, applying and changing simple sterile and/or nonsterile dressings, colostomy care and irrigation, taking/recording blood pressures, administering suppositories and enemas, taking/recording temperature, pulse and respiration; records observations and reports problems and/or…
