BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1995 by a group of experienced certification and testing experts, QAI Laboratories Ltd. (QAI) is a multi-national professional certification body, test laboratory, and inspection agency with offices throughout North America and Asia. We provide services to manufacturers of building products, electrical products, vehicles, and other regulated products. Recognition of the QAI name and logo have grown significantly over the past few years resulting in significant expansion of the business.

QAI is currently looking for a Sr. Technician/ Project Specialist who could independently perform fire resistance and building system testing, lead test setup and assembly construction, prepare and review technical reports, support audits and quality compliance, manage multiple projects, and provide technical guidance to junior staff.

DUTIES: The successful candidate will perform, but not be limited to, the following duties:

  • Conduct and lead fire resistance, firestop, door assembly, exterior wall, and non-combustibility testing in accordance with CAN/ULC S101, S104, S114, S115, S134, and UL 10B/10C standards.
  • Lead the setup, fabrication, and construction of test assemblies, ensuring technical accuracy, structural integrity, and adherence to drawings, specifications, and test standards.
  • Conduct unsupervised testing, data analysis, and technical reporting with a high level of accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues during setup and testing, applying expert interpretation of standards and procedures to ensure correct methodology and valid results.
  • Support internal and external audits and maintain full compliance with the Quality Management System (QMS), ISO requirements, and established safety procedures.
  • Provide technical support in sales, quoting, and client meetings.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects with competing priorities, ensuring deadlines, quality standards, and productivity targets are consistently met.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior staff while supporting client communication, project coordination, and technical discussions as required.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized laboratory environment while actively contributing to continuous improvement and operational efficiency initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned by the manager or its designee.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will:

  • Technical diploma, degree, or equivalent experience in the field.
  • 3+ years of hands‑on experience in construction, fabrication, or laboratory testing environments (fire testing experience considered an asset). Experience in construction / laboratory instrumentation / data acquisition / operating principles / calibration & general laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, technical specifications, and test standards.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem‑solving skills, with attention to detail and build accuracy.
  • Physically capable of lifting heavy materials and performing manual work in a lab/shop environment.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a technical team.
  • Has a basic understanding of quality procedures and HR policies.
  • Understanding of workplace safety practices and experience working in regulated environments.
  • Familiar with MS Office and other software relevant to the position.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Candidates must hold a valid driver’s license.

Additional Assets include:

  • Previous experience with construction materials and building code compliance practices in the US and Canada.
