The Lead Hand is responsible for following the direction of the site in charge in a safe, efficient, and productive manner. The Lead Hand ensures that the quality of the job build meets or exceeds Berto’s standards while advocating an inclusive and respectful work environment.
Responsibilities- Assist the In Charge in supervising the crew and correcting unsafe or inefficient practices.
- Anticipate the needs of the In Charge and take lead when required.
- Represent Berto in a professional and respectful manner when speaking with property owners and tenants, ensuring public safety.
- Ensure that health and safety practices are followed per Work Safe BC and Berto’s Health and Safety Manual.
- Review and ensure the crew has loaded all required material, equipment, and tools for the task.
- Ensure tools, equipment, and trucks are fueled and ready before leaving the warehouse.
- Read and interpret blueprints, as‑builts, and construction drawings to determine job build assignments and task sequence.
- Read and understand all utility locates.
- Use M‑Scope or Locator to locate underground utilities on each job site.
- Assign general work requirements into a prioritised work plan for the crew.
- Ensure crew compliance with company, client, and project policies and procedures.
- Set up confined space entry per Work Safe BC standards.
- Install service boxes, service vaults, manholes, conduits, and pilasters.
- Practice safe trenching and digging methods.
- Interact with members of the public on and around the job site in a professional manner.
- Oversee safety operations of the crew, ensuring tools, equipment, and machinery operate according to prescribed safety procedures.
- Participate in safety and incident investigations.
- Ensure tools, equipment, and machinery safety checks are completed prior to use.
- Ensure public safety around the job site (work zones).
- Apply Berto’s Health & Safety Manual and Work Safe BC procedures at all times.
- Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report any uncorrectable conditions immediately to the In‑Charge or Project Manager.
- Adhere to confined space entry procedures.
- Demonstrate leadership in Health, Safety and Environmental protection at all times.
- 2+ years of civil construction or labourer experience.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Advanced understanding of construction principles and procedures is an asset – includes; identifying utility services and distinguishing utility markings.
- Experience using small power tools (cut‑off saw, plate tamper, drill, jumping jack, generator, air compressor, pneumatic tool, shovels, rakes, etc.) is an asset.
- Reliable transportation access.
- Ability to work near moving mobile equipment in outside conditions, incusive inclement weather, heat, humidity, dust, and asphalt exposure.
- Accept intermittent loud noise and acknowledge overhead and underground hazards.
- Awareness of other trades personnel on the same job site.
- Stand, walk, or run for extended periods of time.
- Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. repetitively.
- Steel‑toe boots, hard hat, safety vest must be worn at all times.
- The Lead Hand reports directly to the In‑Charge or Foreman.
