This position works in the Sewer Operations, Maintenance and Construction organizational unit. This is manual work of some variety entailing physical effort and agility in the performance of semi-skilled and unskilled construction and maintenance tasks. The incumbent performs related tasks in the installation, repair, rehabilitation and servicing of sewer systems; including but not limited to performing sewer cleaning, unstopping, and flushing tasks, digs shafts and tunnels and in trenches of such depth as to require staging, repairs and installs sewer mains and connections;
assists in pipe laying, shoring and timbering work, trenchless rehabilitation techniques; breaks blacktop and concrete surfaces using pneumatic hammer and compressor accessories; assists in concrete finishing for manholes, and catch basins. Performs related work as required.
Responsibilities include installing, repairing, and maintaining sewer systems, performing cleaning and flushing operations, assisting with pipe installation and shoring, operating trenchless rehabilitation equipment, breaking and removing concrete, and assisting with concrete finishing for manholes and catch basins.
Qualifications include up to high school graduation, and experience in general construction and maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some knowledge of the safety equipment and practices methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in sewer related construction and maintenance work, including trenchless rehabilitation; of the functions of the sewer collection system. Ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks requiring the use of some independent judgement and action;
to understand and effectively carry out oral and simple written instructions. Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools used in water maintenance and construction work. Sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination to permit the performance of heavy manual outdoor work in all weather conditions. A valid Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
