As part of the District Safe and Caring School team, the Safe School Support (Substance Use Prevention and Health Promotion) assists, implements and supports the advancement of substance misuse prevention education from a resiliency and health promotion framework, with the goal of increasing the capacity of school staff to better identify, triage and access support for youth and families struggling with substance use concerns.

The District Safe School Specialist implements and adjusts individualized safety plans for children and youth with at risk behaviours and emerging substance use concerns. In addition, the Safe School Support, under the direction of an administrator or designate, acts as a liaison in the school, family, and community.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates subject area expertise in the areas of health promotion, substance use prevention, harm reduction and addictions.
  • Assists in the design, implementation and monitoring of developmental programs which provide guidance and support to students.
  • Gathers data related to individual student needs through methods such as interviews, attends meetings, and observations at a district level.
  • Provides assessment and referral to appropriate risk-reduction service providers.
  • Refers students to appropriate agencies and community resources; establishes and maintains effective working relationships with appropriate agencies and community resources.
  • Creates, delivers, and evaluates substance abuse prevention programming/curriculum throughout the district.
  • Facilitates and coordinates activities such as workshops, lectures, and presentations for students, staff and parents at all district schools.
  • Tracks statistics, submits quarterly reports, and creates flyers and graphic materials. Prepares written reports and correspondence at a district level.
Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Completion of a relevant Bachelor's degree and certification in addictions, substance use plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of a variety of substance abuse, its causes and effective interventions.
  • Demonstration ability to employ preventative or interventative behaviour management.
  • Sound knowledge of current community and agency resources.
  • Demonstrated ability in computer operation and software applications related to work performed.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate and present material.
  • Valid B.C. Driver's License (Class
    5).

The Safe School Support is funded by the Fraser Health Authority and job responsibilities are dependant on contract requirements of the Schedule “A” agreement signed by Burnaby School District and Fraser Health Authority. The Safe School Support may be required to work flexible hours including before and after school hours.

This position offers a competitive salary of $41.70 per hour and a generous benefits package.
