Position: Aquatic Leader 1

Job Summary

This position works in the Eileen Dailly Aquatics Programs organizational unit. It involves aquatic leadership work in assisting a supervisor in the provision of aquatic instructional and recreational programs at Eileen Dailly Pool on an assigned shift, supervising and supporting the work of a team of full‑time, part‑time and auxiliary lifeguards, instructors, and recreation attendants. As the Aquatic Leader 1 on shift, you will be responsible for deck supervision, lesson supervision, ensuring that the pool, change room, and surrounding areas are clean, safe, and well‑maintained for the enjoyment of our residents while meeting standards of cleanliness and safety.

The Aquatic Leader 1 will lead by example and engage in instructional, lifeguarding, maintenance, custodial, and clerical work while participating in the planning, organization and promotion of aquatic programs, aquatic fitness programs, and special events. An Aquatic Leader 1 conducts swimming lessons, lifeguarding and safety training programs for aquatic staff and may participate in the hiring and evaluation of staff and volunteers.

The Aquatic Leader 1 can be responsible for emergency response and will need to prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports while working effectively and courteously with the public, user groups, and a diverse staff team. Performs related work as required.

Responsibilities
  • Deck supervision and lesson supervision.
  • Ensuring pool, change room, and surrounding areas are clean, safe, and well‑maintained.
  • Engaging in instructional, lifeguarding, maintenance, custodial, and clerical duties.
  • Planning, organizing, and promoting aquatic programs, aquatic fitness programs, and special events.
  • Conducting swimming lessons and lifeguarding.
  • Participating in hiring, evaluating, and training staff and volunteers.
  • Responding to emergencies and preparing/maintaining reports.
Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by courses in lifesaving, lifeguarding, aquatics instruction, and pool operation and maintenance.
  • Sound related experience including some supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Sound knowledge of the theory and practice of lifesaving, lifeguarding, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid, teaching methods, group leadership techniques, and pool operations (chemistry, filtration, chlorination, heating, and related equipment).
  • Knowledge of principles and practices involved in implementing, evaluating, organizing, and offering instructional and recreational aquatic programs.
  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with staff, public, and user groups.
  • Driver's license for the Province of British Columbia.
  • Required certifications:
    Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor, National Lifeguard – Pool Award, and Standard First Aid.
  • Additional (asset) certifications:
    Swim Instructor Trainer, National Lifeguard Instructor, First Aid Instructor, BCRPA Aquatic Fitness Leader, Pool Operator.
  • Police Information Check may be required.
