To support production activities while undertaking a structured apprenticeship programme that develops the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to become a competent engineering operative within a commercial vehicle manufacturing environment.

Wage: £15,392 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age.

National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands‑on experience.

What you’ll do at work

The Engineering Operative Apprentice role is designed to develop practical engineering and manufacturing skills across Solomon Commercials’ core production departments. The apprentice will rotate through multiple areas of the business, gaining hands‑on experience in commercial vehicle bodywork, fabrication, assembly, finishing, electrics, and technical support, while building a strong foundation in engineering principles, quality, safety, and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and work instructions
  • Using hand tools, tape measures, and basic measuring equipment
  • Supporting assembly, fabrication, chassis, finishing and engineering activities
  • Assisting with electrical and technical tasks where appropriate
  • Following health, safety, and quality procedures at all times
  • Attending college and completing apprenticeship coursework
General Responsibilities
  • Work as part of a team and support colleagues across departments
  • Follow health, safety, and environmental procedures at all times
  • Maintain a positive attitude to learning and development
  • Attend college and complete all apprenticeship coursework and assessments
Skills & Knowledge Developed
  • Understanding manufacturing and build processes
  • Use of hand and power tools
  • Team working and communication
  • Basic understanding of electrics and compliance
Where you’ll work

Training

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

  • Day release / block release training with Burnley College
  • On‑job mentoring across multiple production departments
  • Clear progression opportunities into Level 3 apprenticeships (e.g. fabrication, electrics, engineering support) subject to performance
Requirements

GCSE in Maths and English (grade A*-D/9-3)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
