NSP Base Capital - Turbine Project Engineer (Staff, Senior or Principal)

Join Xcel Energy as a Turbine Project Engineer and help design, plan, and execute maintenance and upgrade projects at existing generation plants. This role has three levels—Staff, Senior, and Principal—each with increasing responsibility and technical scope.

Responsibilities

The Turbine Project Engineer (Mechanical/Process) provides technical guidance and engineering support across the Capital Projects organization. Key activities include project origination, technology selection, cost estimates, schedule development, preliminary layouts, emissions and materials balances, and vendor/contractor engagement.

  • Interface with plant staff, fleet engineering, and external engineering support contracts.
  • Create technical specifications, process flow diagrams, and plant performance estimates.
  • Engage with major equipment vendors and construction contractors to develop scopes of work and review technical submittals.
  • Support permitting, regulatory activity, and fleet planning strategy.
  • Guide early-career engineers; no direct reports.
  • Provide ongoing technical support for Operations, Maintenance, testing/diagnostics, and regulatory projects.
  • Participate in bid evaluation processes, including preparation of bid documents and technical reviews.
  • Work on budgeting, estimating, forecasting, and accounting related to engineering projects.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Apply technical standards, principles, and theories to complex assignments, including conflicting design requirements.
  • Develop and support technical documentation—designs, testing, calculations, reports—and procedures.
  • Work under general direction for routine projects; provide technical support for project activities.
  • Lead or coordinate small to medium, non-critical projects, and support larger critical projects under supervision.
  • Assist in bid/evaluation processes and coordinate with Supply Chain and Legal.
  • Communicate across organizational boundaries and with external customers.
  • Mentor interns and less experienced engineers; assign tasks as needed.
  • Perform budgeting, estimating, forecasting, and work order management.
Salary Range by Level
  • Staff Engineer: $79,800 – $103,666
  • Senior Engineer: $94,600 – $126,134
  • Principal Engineer: $109,300 – $152,766
Minimum Requirements Staff Engineer
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (ABET accredited); mechanical engineering preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years relevant engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the specialty area and related disciplines.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) strongly preferred.
Senior Engineer
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (ABET accredited); mechanical engineering preferred.
  • At least 5 years relevant experience with EIT/FE; 7+ years without EIT/FE.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration may be required.
  • Demonstrated core competencies for this level.
Principal Engineer
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (ABET accredited); mechanical engineering preferred.
  • 9+ years relevant experience with PE registration; 15+ years without PE.
  • Demonstrated core competencies for this level.
Preferred Experience & Skills
  • Planning and executing capital projects for gas and steam turbines, including major overhauls, outage coordination, budgeting, compliance, and vendor management across multiple sites.
  • Experience with steam cycles, combustion turbines, steam turbines, generators, combined cycles, and/or reciprocating engines.
