The school

Monarch Education, on behalf of our client school, are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant (Level
1) who can join a team of professionals. The pupils are aged 11 to 19 years, with a diverse range of learning disabilities (PMLD, SLD, MLD, SEMH), combined with medical conditions, physical disabilities, visual impairment, hearing impairment, and/ or autism. Successful candidates may be asked to work on the school or college site, in one of five pathways (Thrive, Explore, Inspire, Specialist Provision, or Nurture), either on a 1:1 basis or as part of a class.

The role is both physically and emotionally demanding and involves working with some pupils with challenging behaviour. You will be part of an excellent team and will be given extensive support to develop to your full potential both in this role and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Attend to the pupils’ personal needs, and implement related personal programmes, including social, health, physical, hygiene, first aid and welfare matters.
  • Establish good working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs.
  • Promote inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.
  • Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher.
  • Prepare classroom as directed for lessons and clear afterwards.
  • Be aware of pupil problems/progress/achievements and report to the teacher as agreed.
  • Support the teacher in managing pupil behaviour, reporting difficulties as appropriate.
  • Support pupils in respect of local and national learning strategies e.g. literacy, numeracy, early years as directed by the teacher.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.
  • Assist with the supervision of pupils out of directed lesson time, including before and after school if appropriate and within working hours.
Requirements

Applicants should be able to demonstrate how they meet the following desirable criteria:

  • Experience of supporting young people who have special educational needs and learning difficulties, preferably within an SEN school setting
  • Experience of supporting young people to overcome barriers to their personal, social or learning development from a pastoral perspective
  • A nurturing and empathetic approach to behaviour management
  • The physical and emotional resilience to support pupils with SEN and SEMH difficulties, understanding that all behaviour is a form of communication
  • Experience of supporting teaching and learning activities for students, and providing support for the class teacher in the preparation and organisational processes involved in the day to day running of a lesson.
