An opportunity has arisen to join our clinical team of 4 GP partners, 2 salaried GPs and 5 Nurse Practitioners here at Ixworth Surgery. The post offers part‑time hours of 6 sessions per week.

Main duties of the job
The post‑holder will manage a caseload and deal with a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting, ensuring the highest standards of care for all registered and temporary patients.

About us

Ixworth Surgery is a GMS GP practice with a patient list of 9,500. It is owned and operated by 4 GP partners and supported by salaried GPs, nurse practitioners, a respiratory nurse specialist, practice nurses, a nursing team, a social prescriber and a PCN pharmacy technician. The practice has an in‑house pharmacy/dispensary and a full complement of other primary care staff.

We are a teaching practice for Cambridge medical students and GP trainees, we are also research accredited and have been rated as Good by the CQC in January 2026.

Responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities:

  • Make yourself available in accordance with the practice timetable to undertake a variety of duties, including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, patient home visits, repeat prescriptions and paperwork
  • Make professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems
  • Assess the healthcare needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems
  • Screen patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness
  • Develop care plans in consultation with patients and in line with current disease management protocols
  • Provide counselling and health education
  • Admit or discharge patients to and from the caseload and refer to other care providers as appropriate
  • Record clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards
  • Collect data for audit purposes
  • Compile and issue computer‑generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand‑written prescriptions whenever possible)
  • Prescribe in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever clinically appropriate
  • Undertake all the normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care

  • Be aware of and comply with all relevant practice policies and guidelines (prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety)
  • Commit to life‑long learning and audit to ensure evidence‑based best practice
  • Contribute to evaluation, audit and clinical standard setting within the organisation
  • Contribute to the development of computer‑based patient records
  • Attend training and events organised by the practice or other agencies, where appropriate
  • Develop an area of special interest following discussion with the partners and the needs of the practice
Person Specification

Experience (Desirable)

  • Experience of working to achieve standards within the Quality and Outcome Framework (QOF)
  • Experience of supporting service change
  • Experience of service improvement and quality initiatives
  • Experience with clinical IT systems, e.g. Systm One

Physical Requirements

  • Commit to a DBS check
