Maintenance Engineer

Location: Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

Contract: Full-Time, Permanent

Salary: Up to £50,000 + overtime

Compass Point Recruitment is partnering with a well‑established manufacturing business in Bury St Edmunds to recruit a Maintenance Engineer with a strong mechanical bias. This is a hands‑on role focused on maintaining and repairing production and utility equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation within a high‑volume manufacturing environment. You'll join a proactive and experienced engineering team where mechanical expertise plays a key role in minimising downtime and driving continuous improvement.

Shift

Pattern
  • Panama shift pattern, rotating between days and nights; a full annual shift rota is provided in advance.
  • 12‑hour shifts.
  • Excellent work‑life balance – effectively around 50% of the year off when accounting for rest days and holidays.
Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned preventative and reactive mechanical maintenance across all production and utility equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical faults on conveyors, gearboxes, pumps, motors, bearings, hydraulics, and pneumatic systems.
  • Support electrical fault‑finding where required as part of a multi‑skilled maintenance team.
  • Assist with the installation, commissioning, and continuous improvement of new and existing machinery.
  • Accurately record maintenance activities, breakdowns, and corrective actions.
  • Actively participate in the BOPEX / continuous improvement programme.
  • Ensure full compliance with site safety procedures, regulations, and company policies.
  • Identify, report, and stop unsafe operations, using PPE as required.
Skills & Experience Required
  • Proven experience working as a Maintenance Engineer in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment (e.g., product handling, conveying systems, elevating equipment).
  • Strong mechanical fault‑finding skills with hands‑on repair experience.
  • Background in hydraulics, pneumatics, rotating equipment, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Relevant mechanical qualifications (NVQ, HNC/HND, or apprenticeship‑trained in Mechanical Engineering or Maintenance).
  • Experience working continental or 12‑hour shift patterns is advantageous.
  • Practical, safety‑focused, and methodical approach to maintenance engineering.
