Substation Project Structural Engineer
HDR Engineering is looking for a Substation Project Structural Engineer to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals. The role focuses on the structural design components of high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects up to 500 kV, including steel structure and foundation analysis & design. You will work closely with Project Managers and multi‑office project teams to deliver robust, reliable, and sustainable infrastructure solutions.
Responsibilities- Execute detailed design, calculations, and detailing for substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.
- Prepare and review foundation design for substation structures, including drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and other foundation types.
- Develop or review construction specifications and material requirements.
- Assign tasks to EITs and provide technical guidance to non‑structural project team members.
- Perform quality checks and reviews in accordance with HDR QMS requirements.
- Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain design standards.
- Mentor and train EITs and designers.
- Manage multiple concurrent projects, coordinating with teams in different locations.
- Participate in project reviews as needed.
- Travel may be required.
- Experience designing high‑voltage switchyard and substation projects of varied complexity.
- Knowledge of NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113, AISC‑360, ASCE‑7, ACI‑318, and other industry standards.
- Proficiency with design software including PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, Micro Station, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile, and equivalents.
- Minimum 5 years of technical design experience in high‑voltage substation projects, including foundation and steel structural design.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong conceptual, organizational, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Valid Professional Engineering license (PE or P.Eng) as required by the jurisdiction.
- Prior structural engineering experience in a consulting context.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RISA, STAAD, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE, or similar.
- Experience in an architectural, engineering, or consulting firm.

Full‑time regular position. Salary range $90,682 – $145,990 (based on experience, education, and location).
