An Electrical Distribution Wildfire Mitigation Associate Graduate Engineer at HBK Engineering is a position designed for recent engineering graduates entering the professional workforce. This entry‑level role involves providing contract engineering resources to a local electric and gas utility in Butte, Montana. The position will support the company’s wildfire mitigation efforts in analyzing and improving critical overhead power distribution lines identified as high risk to wildfire.
The person in this position will first conduct field surveying in various rural and urban locations throughout Montana, which includes hiking in adverse terrains. Once field surveying is complete, data will be used to build a pole loading and clearance model on the computer. They will suggest fixes and put together a construction package including drawings, plans, and materials, and then manage the work during construction.
You’ll Do
- Design engineering systems in compliance with relevant specifications, codes, and client requirements for overhead and subsurface utility projects.
- Deploy creative and unique solutions to address a wide variety of complex electrical, structural, civil, and construction‑related challenges.
- Own all phases of the design lifecycle from initiation through construction completion and project closeout.
- Prepare detailed engineering and construction documents using a variety of software tools including DDS (Distribution Design Studio), GIS systems, Trimble surveying equipment, and client‑specific enterprise asset management platforms.
- Analyze information from supplementary data sources including topographical survey, utility atlas information, field sketches, client records, manufacturer equipment datasheets, etc.
- Independently manage time and schedule to achieve project milestones.
- Perform field walkdowns with internal staff, clients, customers, governance authorities, and construction partners.
- Obtain proper permits and easements as required.
