Print Assistant
Responsible for supporting the Lead Printer in operating a flexographic print machine while ensuring safe, controlled operations in line with required standards and procedures.
Responsibilities- Set up and operate print machinery to optimum levels safely, maintaining machinery and area per health, safety, environmental, hygiene and housekeeping standards.
- Log and clean spills immediately.
- Operate in line with site health and safety, environmental and quality standards, and meet BRC, ISO & A2 environmental requirements.
- Apply lean manufacturing techniques (SMED and 5S) and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain press consumables, load/offload master reels and inks on the print press.
- Manage and operate the press in the absence of the Lead Printer, including breaks.
- Spot and report non‑conformities to the Lead Printer or Shift Manager and support resolution.
- Support training of colleagues when required.
- Contribute to shift handovers to ensure smooth transition and continuous production.
- Ensure the press is in appropriate operational condition and brief the next shift on production status.
- Assist with general cleaning and maintenance of print equipment.
- Collaborate with other areas such as Ink Technicians and Mounters to maintain production standards.
- Display flexibility to support other areas of Production, including operating conversion/slitting machinery.
- Perform any other duties requested by the line manager within the scope of the role.
- Part or fully trained printer, preferably with flexographic experience.
- Relevant Print NVQ Level 2 or 3 is an advantage.
- Additional qualifications such as fire safety, first aid, etc., an advantage but not essential.
- Good level of literacy and numeracy, preferably GCSE level in English and Maths.
- Professional print experience, preferably flexographic with solvent‑based inks.
- Background in manufacturing, either label or packaging printing.
- Exposure to Lean Six Sigma or other continuous improvement techniques an advantage.
- Q.S.E. knowledge/training.
- Considerable exposure to quality, health, safety and environmental standards and practices within a production setting.
The role operates 12‑hour shifts across a 4‑week continental shift pattern.
- Week1 – 4 nights, 3 off
- Week2 – 3 days, 1 off, 3 nights
- Week3 – 3 off, 4 days
- Week4 – 7 off
Shift patterns may be subject to change depending on business requirements.
A reasonable level of fitness is required as the role involves physical activity such as lifting and bending.
