McWane Inc. has a newly created division, McWane Plant and Industrial (MPI), based in Birmingham, AL. The division combines all Plant and Industrial Products in a single customer‑focused package, offering comprehensive solutions through an experienced team focused on these markets. The mission is to be the easiest supplier to do business with, simplifying engineering, specification, and ordering of components for plants, and providing support for smoother delivery, cost‑effective installation, and start‑up.
MPI fosters strong relationships with design engineers, contractors, plant operations teams, and project owners.
This role builds the design and modeling foundation of MPI’s product portfolio. Products are manufactured at Alabama Dynamics, Calera, AL. The designer will develop baseline models/drawing packages in standard formatting for each product line, create best practices and work instructions, and communicate regularly with Manufacturing and Product Management.
Scope of Responsibilities- Support technical product engineers in development of new and existing products and/or technologies within the MPI portfolio.
- Perform PLM documentation work: filing ECO/DCOs, creating procedures, work instructions.
- Analyze design solutions using engineering software tools and statistical methods.
- Identify and mitigate risks associated with equipment functionality, safety, COGs and manufacturing scalability.
- Work closely with engineers, manufacturing, and sales to ensure collaborative design systems.
- Perform checking procedures as assigned by Engineering Manager/Director.
- Work with and manage external suppliers, conduct DFM reviews, and go on site as needed.
- Follow ISO procedures to ensure consistent and documented product release.
- Maintain a positive and efficient work environment built on creative exchange of information, ideas, and techniques.
- Associate’s degree in Mechanical Design (highly desired).
- Recent graduate to 4 years experience in CAD/Modeling;
Solid Works preferred. - Experience in steel manufacturing technology and processes.
- Demonstrated use of independent judgment to identify improvement opportunities.
- Comfortable balancing multiple priorities.
- Knowledgeable in lean CAD layout planning.
- Demonstrated highest level of ethics, integrity, and honesty.
- Accredited 2‑year technical degree.
- Experience creating solid models using Solid Works.
- Intermediate computer and software skills including word processing, e‑mail, spreadsheet and electronic presentation programs.
- Work in a fast‑paced environment, under pressure and within project deadlines.
- Work cross‑functionally and with other McWane divisions.
- Up to 10% travel (air/car) to vendors and other sites as needed.
- Meet physical requirements for traveling to various MPI locations with appropriate PPE.
- Valid driver’s license and eligibility for auto insurance coverage.
