Field/Service Technician, Installation Technician
Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator is an entry level position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical transmission systems. This position works at various locations and may also require travel to another state depending on customer demands.
Essential Functions- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead work.
- String overhead wire.
- Set poles and anchors.
- Assist with installing transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches and switch gear.
- Assist in replacing fuses in transformers and clear faulted circuits and systems.
- Frequently work with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
- Perform rigorous physical labor.
- Use company radio and heavy equipment properly.
- Understand basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.
- Use and maintain hand tools properly.
- Receive and follow directions.
- Learn basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
- Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
- Be familiar with induced voltage.
- Assist with the installation and hook‑up of a single‑phase transformer.
- Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
- Understand equipment set‑up and grounding concepts.
- Work at heights and/or confined spaces.
- Understand minimum approach distance.
- Check voltage on transformers.
- Follow flag and tag procedures.
- Install and remove a service.
- Inspect rubber goods and PPE properly.
- Know when to wear personnel protective equipment.
- Make up and use a hand line.
- Use Kellum grips appropriately.
- Identify different materials used in line work.
- Work outside, often in inclement weather.
- Will work glove/hand on high voltage transmission lines.
- Perform any other related work as required to complete the job.
- 2+ years of minimum experience.
- Read and communicate effectively in English.
- Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
- A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
- Travel long distances on short notice when required.
- Work for extended periods in various locations when required.
- Lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Inspect rubber goods and PPE properly.
- Work overtime, weekends, holidays, and outside the normal schedule when required.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle and feel, and reach with hands and arms.
Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction sites. Noise levels can be loud. The position is performed in outdoor weather conditions.
