Job Description & How to Apply Below

About the Role

As a Senior Accountant, you will be traveling onsite to small communities (50 to 1,000 people) in the Northwest Territories while working with an engagement team to complete audits for First Nations and their subsidiaries. You will be introduced to clients and begin building an understanding of the issues they face and the goals they hope to achieve. Your role in the audit will be fundamental – testing all aspects of the financial statements, as well as clients’ internal controls.

Among our Calgary clients, you will also be building a more contemporary public practice skillset – working with our diverse set of owner‑managed businesses and non‑profits. You may be performing everything from bookkeeping using various software, to assurance and compilation engagements, to completing corporate and personal tax returns.

You will learn how we provide peace of mind by "Making Business Fun", in addition to helping clients advance towards their personal goals.

What Your Day‑to‑Day Will Look Like
  • Work within an engagement team to perform audit testing and prepare audit working papers
  • Engage with clients directly – assisting and performing bookkeeping tasks that involve fund accounting (primarily using Sage 50), in addition to year‑end related inquiries and other accounting requests
  • Plan, complete, and oversee audit/compilation/review/tax engagements – as an individual, or as part of a team
  • Provide engagement progress updates to the COO/engagement partner on a regular basis
  • Develop and contribute to the firm’s overall quality control
  • Provide detailed file reviews and mentorship for other teammates when needed
  • Track billable/non‑billable time spent on a daily basis
What You Need to Succeed
  • You hold an active Canadian CPA designation
  • You have at least five years of post‑qualification public accounting experience and familiarity with direct client services
  • You do not require sponsorship to work in Canada and are able to work from our head office in Calgary when needed
  • You have a genuine desire to embrace the opportunity of travel to Northern Canada for one to two weeks at a time
  • You are easy‑going, adaptable, and able to accommodate to the challenges and conditions that remote communities may face
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills to draft letters, prepare reports, and interact with clients and team members
  • You believe in the importance of delivering quality client service
  • You have a strong skillset with the use of information technology, including Microsoft Office and other applications, to manage work tasks efficiently and effectively
  • You have the ability to work independently and adapt to change in a fast‑paced environment
  • You are structured, organized, and can manage engagement timelines
  • You enjoy collaborating with others to solve problems and taking the initiative to resolve unexpected challenges
  • You have experience managing or leading a team in a previous workplace
  • You have worked extensively with Sage 50 or another accounting system
  • You hold an open‑mindset and eagerness to learn from others’ perspectives
  • You have a personal interest in Indigenous culture and related issues
Why Join Us?
  • Hold an unconventional career as an accountant – committing to the improvement of others’ lives, while embracing adventure and meeting new people
  • Endless opportunities for growth – freedom to shape your career in the way that best fits you
  • Mentorship and coaching – we work without ego and are constantly looking for ways to upskill our team, on both a professional and personal level
  • Competitive salary and a flexible private health spending benefits plan – fair compensation and personal wellbeing are of importance to us
  • Starting with three weeks vacation and banked time off – we value work‑life balance
  • Gratitude and supportivenessemployee recognition awards, monthly teambuilders; we have a culture of care and appreciation for one another
  • Flexible work hours – we maintain core operating hours, but with the ability to structure your day based around your personal needs, alongside a flexible working‑from‑home policy
