Overview
This is a Net New role for a Co‑op Student or Intern in BDO’s Forensic Disputes & Investigation (FDI) team in Calgary or Vancouver.
Responsibilities- Develop a forensic mindset, learning how to detect patterns, identify red flags, and connect financial, operational, and legal evidence.
- Strengthen financial modeling skills in Excel, working on loss quantification, economic analyses, and scenario‑based models.
- Gain hands‑on exposure to fraud investigations, commercial insurance claims, and litigation support files.
- Grow communication, client service, and teamwork skills by collaborating with experienced professionals and clients across Western Canada and nationally.
- Support relationships with BDO’s current and prospective clients.
- Actively participate in discussions and meetings with engagement teams to plan work, perform tasks, and deliver excellent client service.
- Work with the engagement team on FDI matters including forensic investigations (fraud, corruption, money laundering, misappropriation), commercial insurance claims (business interruption, product loss, cyber claims), and litigation support (shareholder disputes, breach of contracts, intellectual property matters, construction disruption and delay claims, accounting/financial reporting disputes).
- Examine financial records and documentation, analyze financial data, build financial models, and summarize key observations.
- Conduct economic and industry research to support engagements.
- Contribute to the preparation of financial and loss quantification models used by the team in forensic analyses.
- Assist in drafting clear, concise reports and presentations for clients.
- Develop relationships with peers within BDO and externally with clients and prospective clients.
- Support business development activities and internal practice initiatives.
- Enrolled in a post‑secondary program specializing in Accounting, Finance, Business or related fields with intention of pursuing a CPA designation.
- Strong interest in building a career in Investigative and Forensic Accounting.
- Genuine desire to provide outstanding client service and willingness to help wherever needed.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with curiosity and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to articulate ideas clearly.
- Ability to prioritize competing deliverables and manage varying deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; eagerness to deepen technical skills.
- Experience or strong interest in using data analytics tools; exposure to Power BI or Tableau considered an asset.
Expected compensation range: $48,000‑$60,000.
Work ArrangementTeam members are expected to work in the office, at client sites, and virtually, unless accommodations or alternative arrangements are in place.
