THE ROLE

Our client is a well‑established transportation and logistics organization with a long‑standing reputation for delivering reliable freight solutions across North America. Having built a strong presence over several decades, they are known for their customer‑focused approach, operational excellence, and commitment to continuous improvement. As the business continues to grow, they are seeking an experienced Controller to join their Calgary leadership team.

Reporting directly to the Group Corporate Controller, the Controller will oversee the full accounting function for the Alberta operation while partnering closely with the on‑site General Manager and remote finance team. This is a highly visible, hands‑on leadership role where you'll play a key part in strengthening financial processes, implementing internal controls, and providing accurate financial reporting to support business decision‑making.

This position is ideal for a seasoned accounting professional who enjoys working in a fast‑paced operational environment and isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves to support both strategic initiatives and day‑to‑day accounting activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee the full‑cycle accounting function, ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance.
  • Lead the month‑end and year‑end close processes.
  • Design, implement, and maintain strong internal controls across Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Fixed Assets, and General Ledger functions.
  • Develop and document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for key accounting and finance processes.
  • Support operational accounting activities when required, including reconciliations, invoicing, and other day‑to‑day accounting responsibilities.
  • Coordinate annual audits and review engagements, ensuring all supporting schedules and documentation are prepared accurately and on time.
  • Partner closely with operational leadership to provide financial reporting and business insights.
  • Continuously improve accounting processes, systems, workflows, and financial controls.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate effectively with both on‑site and remote finance teams.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • CPA designation preferred (or equivalent senior accounting experience).
  • Strong experience in full‑cycle accounting and financial reporting.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective internal controls and accounting processes.
  • Experience managing month‑end, year‑end, and external audit processes.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge with excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while managing competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with a collaborative approach.
  • Experience with in a service‑based or operational business is considered an asset.
  • Exposure to mergers, acquisitions, or post‑acquisition integration is a strong advantage.
