Safety Codes Technician II

As a member of the Community Growth and Infrastructure team, the Safety Codes Technician provides technical support regarding Safety Code activities and applications in support of the municipality’s overall operations and development. This includes, but is not limited to managing the processing and recording of all Safety Code permits, keeping data records of all activities relating to construction covered under the Safety Codes Act, organizing inspection schedules, performing minor building plan reviews and issue Safety Code related permits, overseeing preparation of building permit release packages, including actively preparing packages when required and ensuring high quality customer service with regards to permits to all internal and external stakeholders.

• Provides technical support in the implementation and continuous improvement of:
  • Coordination of building permit-related activities reviews all types of safety codes permit applications for completeness and accuracy and ensures it meets the requirements of the Safety Codes Act. Prepares a complete application package for Building Safety Codes Officer review and issuance.
  • Prepares all safety codes permit release packages and is responsible for updating permit records in case of revision submissions and keeps a record of final approvals.
  • Responsible for data entry of permit and inspections data using C-DAS system; issues permit where authorized.
  • Organizes, verifies and emails occupancy documentation for Safety Codes Officers, Permit Holders, owners and occupants.
  • Assists in pulling up building statistics reports and publishing them when necessary.
  • Coordinating inspections: organizes safety codes inspections, assigns and schedules plan reviews and inspections, maintains performance standards; checks results to ensure prompt high- quality service; ensures copies of permits are available for inspection agencies on a daily basis and that database records are provided to and received from inspection agencies on a weekly basis; reviews accuracy of monthly reports for payments to the inspection agencies.
  • Assisting and supporting all Safety Codes Officer on all administrative/ office related matters, including but not limited to: organizing paperwork, scanning, requesting information, processing Verifications of Compliances, etc.
  • Customer service and support: provides exceptional customer service to clients; maintains professionalism by providing best practice recommendations and solutions to both internal and external clients; provides educational resources to clients, ensuring resources are available at the front desk; follows up with clients; works with inspection agencies to ensure adequate staffing coverage during holidays, illness, etc.
  • This position is responsible for the life safety of all buildings through compliance monitoring in accordance with the Safety Codes Act, the National Building Code – Alberta Edition and the City’s Quality Management Plan.

• Represents the City externally, acts as the liaison to industry and members of the public.
