The Wilder Institute is seeking a full-time permanent Communications Advisor to craft engaging social media and video content that inspires action for wildlife, wild places, and the people on our planet. The Communications Advisor work will help tell the stories that matter and directly support our vision of a future where people and wildlife thrive together.
As part of the Brand & Public Relations team, The Communications Advisor will be responsible for creating content that brings our critical conservation initiatives to life. They will use their creative storytelling skills and expertise in social media strategy, content creation, and video production to engage audiences and amplify our impact. The Communications Advisor is detail‑oriented writer and editor, a creative thinker, and a collaborative team player who thrives in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
They also work closely with other key impacted parties including senior leadership, Marketing, Conservation & Science, Development and Government Relations, Conservation Education, Volunteer Relations, and Animal Care, Health & Welfare.

What you will do- Develop, write, edit, and publish engaging content for the Wilder Institute’s social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, X, Linked In, and You Tube.
- Create, edit, and publish short‑form video content optimized for social media.
- Support copywriting for campaigns, video scripts, website content, and other communications materials.
- Ensure all content aligns with brand voice, tone, messaging, and target audiences.
- Execute social media community management, including responding to comments and direct messages according to established protocols.
- Track, analyze, and report on social media metrics to guide strategy and content decisions.
- Collaborate with Marketing to develop campaigns, promotions, and paid social media advertising initiatives.
- Support the management of digital assets (photo and video) including cataloging and archiving.
- Generate creative ideas by monitoring trends, consulting with experts, and collaborating with colleagues.
- Build and maintain effective relationships across departments, such as senior leadership, Marketing, Conservation & Science, Development and Government Relations, Animal Care, Health & Welfare, Conservation Education, and Volunteer Relations, to provide timely communications support.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Post‑secondary education in Communications, Marketing, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in social media management, content creation, or communications, ideally in conservation, nonprofit, or environmental sectors.
- Proven experience creating engaging content for social media, including writing, editing, and producing video content (scripting, shooting, and basic editing).
- Strong storytelling, writing, and editing skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Solid understanding of social media platforms, trends, and analytics tools, including SEO, keyword research, and Google Analytics.
- Familiarity with online paid advertising is an asset.
- Highly motivated, able to prioritize and manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- Creative problem‑solving skills and proactive approach to content development.
- Excellent business judgement and ability to handle sensitive information.
- Collaborative and adaptable, able to work effectively with multiple stakeholders across the organization.
- Experience with photography is an asset.
- Primarily office‑based with extended computer use.
- Social media monitoring during evenings and weekends.
- Some lifting of materials (signs, boxes, tables).
The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
