Host, Alberta at Noon

CBC Calgary is looking for a dynamic new host for Alberta at Noon, our noon hour current affairs and open line radio program that airs province‑wide.

This is a one‑year assignment

You are an insatiably curious storyteller with a passion for drawing information, emotion and stories out of interview subjects. You are equally comfortable holding a politician accountable as you are talking with first time callers, and you know when to put people at ease and when to challenge them.

You understand that audiences want to be both entertained and informed over the lunch hour, and you realize the importance of making audiences feel welcome and part of a community. You know that using a full range of tone, including humour, is key to strong radio current affairs programming.

You have a perspective on the newsroom as a whole, including identifying moments when Alberta at Noon content will work for other platforms, in particular visuals. You are comfortable being on camera and working with the CBC Calgary team on its visual strategy.

You have a sense of adventure, an eclectic range of interests and a keen desire to meet new people, learn about even the smallest Alberta community and be open to new perspectives. You are passionate about championing stories from Alberta’s under‑represented communities, and you love meeting listeners through in‑person public appearances and remote broadcasts.

An exceptional journalist and a keen observer, you must be able to quickly analyze a broad range of issues and thrive in the fast‑paced, high‑pressure world of live, local radio. You have a strong grasp on Alberta’s political landscape and its energy‑driven economy and explosive population growth, and you understand how these issues affect the day‑to‑day lives of the people who live here.

As a leader on the Alberta at Noon team, it’s clear you care about your colleagues on the show and in the newsroom. You act as a team unifier and collaborator, and are always looking for creative solutions to challenges.

  • Interact spontaneously with program participants such as guests, reporters, experts and members of the audience.
  • Work with CBC Calgary to deliver on our visual strategy. This could include repurposing Alberta at Noon for Calgary’s FAST channel or other visual platforms, or doing stand alone visual interviews
  • Host public forums associated with journalistic projects
  • Participate in public relations or community outreach activities to promote Alberta at Noon, related and CBC, with a focus on growing new audiences and building community connections.
Your profile
  • An engaging, curious, and spontaneous on‑air personality, with a wide range of genuine interests, knowledge and insight, reflecting curiosity in many current affairs topics, and an ability to make them relevant to existing and new audiences.
