What We Do:
Since , The Alex has been a community-based, not-for-profit organization providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing-focused programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to accessing traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Services are grounded in principles of health equity, low-barrier access, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person-centered care.
The Dental Health Bus provides hygienist-led mobile preventive oral health services for children and youth aged 3 to 24 who face barriers to accessing traditional dental care. The bus operates in schools and community sites across Calgary, and connects clients requiring restorative treatment to The Alex Dental Access Network and other supports where appropriate.
Reporting to the Program Manager, the Dental Resource Specialist is responsible for safely operating the mobile dental unit, completing set-up of the mobile clinic, and acting as the first point of contact for clients and host site team members. This position is a key team member of the mobile health strategy at The Alex and delivers direct clinical interaction as well as operational support to clinicians.
The Dental Resource Specialist acts as a strong representative of The Alex and our organizational values.
The primary responsibilities are to drive and set up the dental health unit at the host site, and to be the first point of contact for clients and host site team members during clinical hours. This position is a key team member, with a duty to provide exceptional customer service to clients, as well as provide operational support to clinicians working on the mobile dental unit.

What You Will Do:
Operations
Operate a 40-ft dental health unit through variable weather conditions.Perform daily maintenance and assessments of the vehicle’s performance.Coordinate with The Alex’s facilities team and pre-approved vendors for scheduled, routine, and major maintenance and repairs on the mobile dental unit.Drive the bus to alternate sites, community events, and special programming locations as required.Host Site Liaison
Operate as the primary, on-site liaison between The Alex and the host site teams.Develop and maintain strong relationships with host site teams.Represent The Alex’s mobile health program with professionalism and care.Clinical Flow & Client Support
Escort students to and from the host site to The Alex mobile dental unit. Some days a fair amount of walking will be involved.Manage client intake and enter profile information in dental software program.Connect with families to explain clinical findings and assist with resource navigation.Schedule and confirm appointments.Assist clients with resource navigation and referrals, as required.Assist with infection control by wiping high-touch areas, exam rooms, and supporting with sterilization of instruments.Assist with inventory, ordering, and transporting supplies to the mobile unit as required.Support with data collection and documentation.Direct Client Care
Build therapeutic relationships with clients within the workflow of the mobile dental program.Support with clinical skills (if qualified).Perform additional duties as assigned.What You Bring:
Some post-secondary education is required; dental or social work experience will be given preference.Air brake certification is an asset.
