This is an exciting time for Academic Family Medicine in Calgary. The Department of Family Medicine (DFM)—a shared initiative between Primary Care Alberta (PCA), Alberta Health Services (AHS), and the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine is pleased to invite applications for one permanent part-time Family Physician Preceptors (0.4 FTE) at the South Health Campus Family Medicine Teaching Centre. Ideally, this position would start on September 1, 2026, however we are willing to work with candidate.

Why This Role Matters

As a Family Medicine Clinical Preceptor, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping future family physicians while maintaining your own clinical practice. You’ll combine meaningful teaching, longitudinal patient relationships, and team-based care within an innovative academic teaching clinic.

This role is ideal for physicians who thrive in collaborative environments and are energized by coaching learners, contributing to system improvement, and practicing comprehensive family medicine.

What You’ll Do:

You will balance clinical care with teaching, mentorship, and leadership within a supportive academic setting.

Clinical Care & Teaching

  • Provide comprehensive, continuity-based care to a defined patient panel within a Patient’s Medical Home model
  • Supervise, teach, and mentor medical students and family medicine residents
  • Serve as a Competency Coach, supporting learner development through feedback and assessment
  • Participate in scheduled evening clinics
  • Work closely with an engaged interprofessional care team
  • Support the development of team-based care models, new workflows, and interprofessional education
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, scholarly activity, and clinical innovation
  • Model professionalism, accountability, and ethical practice for learners and colleagues

Academic & Departmental Engagement

  • Attend clinical operations, academic, and team meetings as available
  • Participate in educational development and interprofessional learning opportunities
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and respectful care

  • Active registration and good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)
  • CCFP certification
  • Eligibility for an Academic Appointment with the University of Calgary
  • Experience in comprehensive family medicine
  • Interest or experience in interprofessional, team-based care
  • Comfort working with diverse patient populations

  • Current membership on Alberta Health Services’ Medical Staff, with eligibility for appointment within the Department of Family Medicine, Section of Community Primary Care
